I have a 07 civic with 110,000kms with winter tires and start hearing a noise from the rear when I drive at highway speeds. I was wondering it is tire related or wheel bearing noise? Any suggestions?

Most likely: Choppy tire tread, inner edges getting noisy.
Rotate the tires, see if noise moves to the front.

Update: Jacked up rear of car, spun the wheels by hand didn't hear anything other than a small noise after several rotations. I tried to move tire left/right and up/down nothing gave.

Will be installing summer tires next week.

Installed the summer tires, noticed the following
1. the rear control ARM has been replaced has the 'C' on both sides
2. Only one winter tire seems to be uneven wear

Attached are photos.
The summer tires only one seems slightly uneven wear, rotated it to the front.

What should I do next? Check if rear is properly aligned on the Left side?

Is the noise now coming from the front? If so then your noise is caused by the tires.

Do you have a handy printout of the current alignment measurements so I can read it?


Even with the updated suspension parts and even if the alignment were perfect, tires can still wear funny and get choppy.
Regular tire rotation is key to good tire life. If you leave tires on the back too long they can get choppy and noisy.

I installed the summer tires today, haven't drive car much.

Should I ask garage to check rear alignment? I don't have the readings.

What do I do with the current winter tire? Should I replace it or replace both or just rotate them to the front next year?

Your original concern was about noise, right?
Did swapping the tires change the noise?
You have already noted poor tire wear.

An alignment is one of the first things to check and correct, otherwise you will end up with yet another set of poorly wearing tires.

If alignment was way out bad enough to explain the poor tire wear, then correct it and move on.

If alignment was good and deemed NOT the cause of unusual wear, then we look for other causes of poor tire wear, namely lack of routine maintenance (rotation and pressures) and maybe that blocky tread design that promotes poor wear and choppy edges.
Some tire designs are really bad about that type of wear, others not so much.

Or a combination of all those factors.

How much tread is left?
It's a front wheel drive car, don't you want lots of tread on the front in the snow?

1. Will listen to the noise now with the summer tires installed make Riken Raptor 205/55/16
2. Will go check to see if the car is properly aligned front and back
3. As for the winter tires still some good thread left.

When I get the alignment info shall post it, if dealer gives it to me.

Request a copy of the printout when you check in with the car (so they KNOW you want one), and make sure you actually get it when you check out.

Went to dealer for wheel alignment, told me with current state of summer tires cannot perform a alignment. I would need to purchase new tires for them to perform alignment. I end up purchasing new tires and the vibration and noise level has dropped.
1) attached is the alignment report, is this normal or was the car already perfectly aligned?
2) attached is the summer tiers evaluation (old tires)

I was hoping to get a discount of the tires, but he would not do it.

The alignment looks passable.
I would have tweaked the toes a bit more myself, but not many others would go that far.

Are the upper rear arms actually stamped with the "C" as the spec sheet says?




It's your responsibility now, to keep the tires aired and rotated on a very regular schedule.

When they come off for winter, they should be marked so they can go back on the car in the right places in the spring, keeping track of the rotation schedule for that set of tires.
You have 2 different sets of tires to keep track of as far as rotation schedules. I'd keep a notebook in the glovebox for this.

HI, Yes the upper rear are stamped with 'C'. The tires are toyos Extensa A/S.

I feel no more vibrations, noise level has gone down. I still notice some noise at 30 kms/hr, will the uneven thread wear reappear?

For the tire rotation, front to back every 5 kms?

My winter tires also have uneven wear should I replace two of them or all four?

And I wonder how your rotation schedule was for the lifespan of those tires.

Did they get choppy due to owner neglect? Or was it something else?


Meh, nevermind. Just get on board with doing regular maintenance to these tires.

I had winters on and they were noise, the photo is of the winter tires. Then I installed the summer and still noise plus vibration.
Now I have new tires and still some noise, maybe it's just road noise?

So you had 2 different sets of tires, both with choppy treadwear issues.

Could be. Some tires are noisier than others. Just make sure it isn't a bearing problem you hear.


I'm running some 18" Pilot Sport A/S and they started out brand new a whole lot noisier than my original tires.

Update: After about 2,00kms on the new summer tires
1. slight noise still there (might be something else)
2. Vibration completely gone
3. haven't seen any uneven wear but I assume to early.

Noticed today (august 14, 2015) that on the rear of the car one side is high then the other side, how could the dealer have done a 4 wheel alignment and can this be the cause of the wheel noise or something else? roughly 1/4 inch difference in height from left to right side.
