car stopped accelerating

I was on the highway then it was like the car wouldn't let me get up to speed. It just kept decreasing and decreasing in speed. Now the car won't even start.
Earlier that day I made the mistake by mashing on the gas really hard while it was in neutral which may have caused the problem. Any help would be great !!!!!

Re: car stopped accelerating

Year and trim level?

Is there any codes? How many miles are on it?

Re: car stopped accelerating

About 65,000 or less, 2011 Honda civic
And what do you mean codes?
And just for additional information, the check engine light did not come on when this happened

Re: car stopped accelerating

I meant check engine light when I said codes.

My initial thinking was that your timing belt might have snapped but the car does not have many miles on it and you would have probably heard a noise when it happened.

Bad fuel possibly? or no fuel. You need to do a diag for fuel, spark and compression.

Re: car stopped accelerating

I know absolutely nothing about cars thats why I was lost when you mentioned codes. I went to check it out this morning and the inside lights for the radio....etc just flicker.

Re: car stopped accelerating

Thought all the newer civics had timing chains, not belts?
Regardless, have you phsyically looked at the engine to see if anything looks out of place?

Re: car stopped accelerating

They sprayed started fluid into the hose leading to the pump and the car cranked then went back out.

My fault, yes the R series has a chain. It depends on the engine. K series have chains also.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Ran out of gas?

Earlier that day I made the mistake by mashing on the gas really hard while it was in neutral which may have caused the problem.
That alone can't hurt it. The computer limits what you can do.

Doubt it, they have been rock solid reliable IMO.

Did you just get fuel like 1-2 miles before the car died?

If you didn't just get gas, then my vote might be: contaminated MAF sensor, something like a bug carcass stuck in it. Due to an air filter problem.

So...What's the answer?

Re: car stopped accelerating

Okay I know this was like 6 years ago, but i have the same issue and it was right after I got gas, it seemed like you knew what it would be 1-2 miles after gas so I was wondering if you could help
(99 civic)
I have a new fuel pump too so it shouldn’t be the issue

Re: car stopped accelerating

I’m taking it into a mechanic to have a look at my obd2 port, the ground weren’t connected and after i got them in the reader turned on but couldn’t connect, but other that that i’ve checked it all. Also it happened about a mile after getting gas so it seems like he has an idea on what it is.
