Buzzing noise when I try to start the car (electrical, i think) [solved]

I have a 2006 civic and for the past several months there has been a buzzing noise whenever I turn the ignition. It's been sporadic for the first few months but now it happens pretty much every time I try to start it and my car will not start.

The buzz is located in the dashboard above my left knee when i'm in the driver seat.

When i would turn the key slowly it would start, but now it just buzzes

I tried replacing the starter cut relay but the problem is still buzzes and the car still wont start.

My friend said it might be the starter solenoid, but I don't know how to check.

Can anyone help please?

Take off the lower left cover with the coin pocket, and when the buzzing occurs reach down and grasp the under dash fuse box and see if you can feel any vibration while buzzing is occuring.

Yeah it's buzzing and vibrating where the starter cut relay is. I didn't feel any vibration anywhere else.

What transmission ?? If it is an auto try to get it into N and see if it still buzzes when attempting.

re: Buzzing noise when I try to start the car (electrical, i think) [solved]

From what I can see the starter cut relay is provided power to one side of it's coil and the other side of coil is provided a ground when the transmission range switch is in park or neutral positions (allowing the starter to only engage in P or N positions) You may have a poor connection in the coils circuit(could be voltage source or ground path) causing the buzzing (relay rapidly switching on/off)

If you want the info I have from the factory manual I can put some together for you.

let me know.

Have you looked around on the 8th gen Civic site ?? There are a couple of videos for a no start situation, but nothing on buzzing from under dash.

Are the dash indicators coming on when key turned to II ??

The 8th gens have problems with the battery terminals making poor connections over time, you may check those.

Hi Erin,

My problem turned out to be an ignition switch that needed to be replaced. If you have the same problem, it's a super easy fix. Hope that helps!
