Half of rear defroster not working?

Hi,

I just got a 2004 civic and the top 2-3 bars of the rear defroster(which has the antenna) is not working. Only the bottom part is working. The mechanic told me that it never works and that part is only the antenna.
Is that true or is he just saying it so that he doesnt have to fix it in the warranty?

um the antenna is the straight line that goes down vertical thru the middle. now you can trace to see what else its connected to, just follow the lines. i dont use my defrost enough to know how many lines it uses. but trace them all, see which ones are connected to the antenna or the power feeds on each side. it may just have a small break in the line thats causing part of it not to work.

My sedan has 12 grid lines. I would have to say the top 1/3 of the glass is not heated.

Whenever I turn on my defrost I notice every horizontal line melting snow/ice. I haven't noticed any blank spots.

all the way on the top of mine doesn't defrost either, I think that's just how it is

if you guys go look at your cars, find the big spot where the defrost power connects to the window. follow it up the side of the window until it turns in towards the middle. that's where the defrost ends. the rest of the window (6" or so) on up to the top, those wires are your radio antenna. they are not designed to defrost your window, and therefore, they won't.
