I bought factory 17" Si rims to fit them on my '06 Civic Hybrid, giving it a nicer look and a better ride ... The tire shop mounted them and the front wheels rubbed against the brake calipers. I had them put back the old wheels.
I have done some research and it appears that Hybrid's front brakes are larger than regular Civics. Collegehills Honda's part manager told me that, in fact, the part numbers are different for Hybrid breakes versus other Civics. He said the problem is related to the wheels' offset. The 17" Si wheel's offset is 45. The guy above recommended going with 55 offsets using Accord wheels. The guy at Tirerack said buy aftermarket wheels with offsets of 50.
Anyway, I am pretty confused now ... Could anyone answer the below:
1) Is the problem truly related to the offset?
2) If I went with Accord wheels (17") with offsets of 55, would the package look weird (wheels sticking out the body?)
3) Does anyone know what's the offset of the original Hybrid 15"x6" wheels?
4) Any other suggestions and comments?
Thanks,
AlHybrid

5mm=0.1968"
If you can eyeball that with a tire on there, it'd be impressive.
Tire rack merely plays a math game with the rims. They take the 6" rim, stretch it to 7" and attempt to maintain the centerline, i.e. shift it over 1/2 an inch. If they're shifting the wheel 1/2 an inch that means the 15x6 is in the high 50s.
Using the accord wheels wouldnt stick em out, just look at how much room they left you inside the fenders.
I'm not surprised the hybrid brakes are different... its the regenerative stuff thats taking up room.
Thanks for the reply and details. So, you are thinking that switching over to Accord's 17" rims with offset of 55 might cause the tires to hit the fenders on uneven roads and bumps? If I went with 16" Accord rims (with 55 offset), do you think I would still have that problem?
The only real way to figure it out is to do it.
From looking at the rediculous amount of room in the new Civic fenderwells, I'd say you could probably stuff an 8" rim in there without thinking about it. So any 7" wheel should easily go in. You're sweating fractions of an inch here.... its not enough to make a difference
Thanks. I agree about the fenderwells. The current 15" wheels on the Hybrid look so ridiculously tiny that even the 16" 5-spokes (on EX 4D) do not look like much of an upgrade either as the car still looks skinny ... anyway, thanks for the comments and I will likely try out an Accord 17" just for seeing where this would take me.
