cold air turbo intake?

ok i usually see everyones turbo set up run the filter so it grabs warm air. is there a reason people dont route the intake for cold air? i thought it would be a lot more effective to get cold air especially with boost. To remove this ad, register today for free or log in if already registered!

Re: cold air turbo intake?

The turbo pushes the air temp up so much by compressing it, it makes little difference... the intercooler is really your best friend. Besides that, there's not a whole lot of room to jam a 3rd pipe in the fenderwell with a filter on it. As long as the turbo's got air, let the intercooler do its job.

Re: cold air turbo intake?

I was wondering something similar, I've always seen intake piping coming off the compressor side on 2JZ's and SR20's it made me think it's the location of the turbo. Since those engine's are mounted I don't know what you call it, sideways the exhaust manifold is set further back, allowing for more room to reach up and grab colder air.

Re: cold air turbo intake?

Its not so much the compressed air, but the fact that the turbo compresses hot exhaust gases. Anything you can do to improve cooling will lower intake temps. But if your intercooler system is efficient enough, your intake temps shouldn't be that much above ambient air temp anyways.
