No you dont have to get the springs/retainers, you WILL however need to buy a new motor after using it w/out them.

Did he say that you need the springs and retainers so that you don't throw a rod? Wow, I'll ignore that and just say this. With the much higher lift on your cams now and the fact that your stock springs are probably getting tired anyway, changing out the springs and retainers is the best course of action. Even without reving any higher than you have been, you'll be running the risk of valve float, the best analogy I can think of is you trying to pull back a two sticks in the same amount of time with the same force, the only problem being is that one of those sticks is like 50% longer than the other, you might pull it off by a small margin, but the moment that margin is lost your fucked. Oh and just keep in mind that aftermarket retainers are only really used as a means of lightening the valve train for higher rpm operation since stock retainers are ofter made of steel and the aftermarket of billet aluminum, so they aren't inherently necessary but I say go for it since it eliminates any thoughts that the new springs might not fit with your old ones.

wo wo wo chief.^

I just gave a "worse case scenario" situation.

A number of things could go wrong.

But I like how you manage to disagree and agree with me in the same paragraph.

so am I wrong?

The springs fit in the stock retainers. They're exactly the same size. Anything beyond stage 1 requires the crower spring/retainer set with the higher spring rates to keep the valves from floating with the higher lift.

You dont throw a rod, you stand a chance of Mr. Valve and Mr. Piston being the same spot at the same time, and Mr. Valve always loses. Then you wreck the piston and the head, along with the valve and find yourself in a heap of trouble.

Any valve spring that fits a D16 fits the 17, everyone I've seen uses the crower ones since they're have the right seat pressure to match their cam.

Ummm you don't need to search on here to find that information. Even still the fact that you found info on the NA and stage 3 cam probably also says you found someplace that you need springs and retainers, calling crower would have sorted it out in a flash, or calling whereever you were planning on buying it from would have too.

you couldnt have searched too hard, I found it in less than 5 minutes. Punch in "crower stage 2"
