2001 front tie rod end replacement?

Managed to rip the grease boot on one while replacing my old struts with some new KYB's . Are they just threaded on or is there some special tool/process I'm going to need to get it off? Also, what is the castley-looking nut on the bolt shown here http://www.car-stuff.com/includes/se...QgdGhlIHBhcnQu because that's definitely not on my car. Mine has a nut that you thread up and a cotter pin that fits through the bolt below it... To remove this ad, register today for free or log in if already registered!

Re: 2001 front tie rod end replacement?

Take the nut off and then pound a pickle fork in between the ball joint and the hub. this will seperate the two pieces.. then twist off the balljoint from the steering arm. replace the ball joint and torque the castle nut to about 60 pounds... install the cotter pin when the castle nut is lined up with the hole in the balljoint threads...
