header & exhaust question

I just got a 04 civic ex and I am in the market for a catback exhaust with header. I called my local exhaust guy in North Carolina and he told me that he would only do a catback exhaust and said that he wouldnt touch from there. Will my car not pass emissions or somethin? If I get a Megan catback and a Megan header and use my old catylaic converter will that not work? Or am I missing something? If I can do thsi will I have to get a new cat. to fit the new exhaust piping? Thankz in advance for all help!!! To remove this ad, register today for free or log in if already registered!

Re: header & exhaust question

You won't have to worry about a bolt on part like that fitting if you buy one that was designed specifically for your car. Unless you buy something like a test pipe or straight tubing that replaces your cat it should all fit together properly and be completely legal. Don't buy Megan exhaust products, and I also suggest you put the headers and the catback on yourself. It's not at all complicated. Good luck.

Re: header & exhaust question

The header and catback should bolt up directly to the head and the stock catalytic converter. You may need to adjust the hangers a bit for the catback to sit just right. When I did mine, everything bolted together as it should.

Look at:

RSR ExMag
Greddy Evo 2
HKS Hi-Power

I have a Skunk2 N1 MegaPower catback and with headers plus a test pipe it is loud as hell, so your header may take some of the silence away from your exhaust. I might look into getting a highflow catalytic converter to even out the exhaust flow. Never know until you try it.

Re: header & exhaust question

I'm not sure if anyone is still following this. I'm experiencing some technical difficulties with my exhaust system. Me and a couple of buddies just installed my DC Sports Header, Random Technology SuperHigh Flow Cat including B pipe, and a Skunk2 exhaust all at once. It ran fine on the test runs and on the 30 minute drive home. It scraped hard on the speed bumps at my apartment complex when I got home. Didn't think much about it, took it easy over it on the way out again, and back again. But this morning when I fired it up, it sounded (and felt) like the cat was rattling against the bottom of the car. Not cool. Is there a permanent way to fix this? Or am I going to have to reach under the car and pull the cat/pipe down to where it doesn't touch the car every time I get in?

JetRudie, does your Skunk2 ride pretty low under your car? Do you scrape much? Have you experienced anything like that?

Test pipes are illegal because they dont have cats. We have ONE header.

Hi flow cats flow at nearly the same rate as a test pipe. The diamater of the exhaust pipe, even at 2.5inches will be more restrictive on the flow than the catalyst of a hi flow cat.

Almost all exhausts for our cars create clearance issues- mainly the pipe just after the cat yet before the muffler. If your RT cat is viberating on your car, it may be damaged from your driving over the speed bumps. Most likely its just viberating from a cold start. It may be hitting your sway bar up front, or your oil pan. The only way to know what is up is with looking under your car... you need to have the weight on the wheels to truely see whats up... (drive up on some ramps).

Re: header & exhaust question

Upon further investigation I've come to the conclusion that the RT cat is hitting the heat shield directly under the shifter of the car. The cat sits inside the shield a little offset to the driver's side of the car and rattles against it. I'll either modify the heat shield or re adjust the cat to where it sits equidistant from any sides. Thanks for the help Triz.

Re: header & exhaust question

meagan headers are not carb legal... as for the megan catback exhaust.. if its behinf yer stock cat convertor you should be fine but check yer state laws, in CA. anything behind the cat convertor is legal.. but headers have to have a carb number on them

Re: header & exhaust question

will a aftermarket header fit into a stock downpipe? or do you have to get a exhaust system to fit?
