a new lease on life...

So the other day while surfing CL I found a D17A1 with 4,500 miles for $400. I called the guy, he said he can prove it only has that many miles and give me a 30day warranty. My car currently has 117,000 on the ticker, miles shouldn't mean much considering i've maintained it religiously, but i'm buying this motor and starting fresh. Right now I have I/H/E and a centerforce df clutch. So I guess the reason i'm making this thread besides to torture you with my lameness is because i'm looking for some tips from a few of ya. I don't have the budget to go turbo, i'd rather kswap anyway (sorry foos). But i'd like to do pretty much whatever I can to make the most of my little A1. I know some of you have had your throttle bodies bored out, I forgot the company, who does it and what do you have to do to make it work when it gets back? I remember something about the TPS?? Also, has anyone used different pistons? Basicly right now I'm just planning on getting the new motor, painting the block black so she's nice n purdy, putting in new motor mount rubbers, new clutch and flywheel and whatever else I can gather from here. Thanks for reading and all input is helpful as long as your not telling me to turbo or kswap, i'm po folk.....

Boost it.

Naw, maxbore is the company for the TB services. I think robear racing does them too, but I can remember. When you get the motor, pull the head off and polish it. Not the outside, the inside. That will help things a bit with the NA stuff. Then drop a stage 1 cam in there (or save up for it) and get a fuel controller to run the cam, like the FIC or PCS. That should be plenty fun for you.

oem engine is already designed well for na. porting will prolly hurt performance. you want the hatched lines for mixing the air around. tb porting never worked, the engine light comes on for messed up tps voltage

well also my auto tranny felt like it was gonna fall apart, and it would get stuck in gear and not shift. or shift very hard. i had to limp it home when the cel came on. maybe manual wont matter as much, but it screws up how the car drives. too many sensors on the d17 so i think it gets confused.

I see, very helpful. What about GX pistons, I knew there was a guy on d-series that was going to try it for higher compression, has anyone sucessfully done it?

Re: a new lease on life...

gx pistons you will need to run REALLY high octane like 100+ otherwise you will get detonation, and they arent forged or anything, so i wouldnt expect too much power out of it
