exhaust questions

Well a few months ago right before i started college i had a local guy do a custom 2.5" exhaust on my lx with a vibrant ultra quiet 2.5" resonator. I did have a megan racing axle back with the "fart can" muffler and it sounded decent until i had it put on the end of my 2.5" piping. So by the time i had my new exhaust the car sounded decent nothing amazing but decent. It was however very loud. *note that the car has a kamikaze header without a cat*

Well when i got to college i found out that they don't look well upon loud exhausts in this town ( Colorado Springs ) and recieved a ticket for a modified exhaust. To fix the loud problem i bought a 4" silencer. Received the silencer only to find out that my tip was a 4.5" tip. so i did my best to put the silencer in and the car was a little quieter but sounded horrible at 3000 rpm and above. This lead my into the search of a new muffler.

Well being in college and all i became what some people would call poor. This meant my options were slim on what i could buy (200 bucks and less). I ended up buying one of the M-power style twin loop mufflers off of ebay for around 50$. Once i bought the muffler i found out that no muffler shops in my town, which is a 5.5 hr drive from here, were open on weekends. You might ask why not just have it installed here right? well in this lovely town it is illegal to have an exhaust shop put on most aftermarket exhausts without the car being towed from the shop and the owner signing a waiver saying that the car is strictly for "off-road" purposes. awesome right? well me and my dad ended up sawing the old muffler off and using c-clamp to attach it to the pipe and some plumbers tape ( thats what my dad calls it) as hangers. This setup works however is not what i would call a permanent solution.

The new muffler has a nicer tone , deeper and less "farty". one of my roommates stated, " Its sounds like your car grew some balls." Had a good laugh about that and it made me feel a little better about the new setup. Needless to say this setup is also somewhat loud but not rear as loud as the last (without the silencer). I am going to go a a shop that my friend suggested to have them "fix" my new setup. its my loophole because hes not installing it. I was going to have him weld on some normal hangers and tuck the muffler better because it sticks out a lot in its current state ( we couldnt really play with the placement when we put it on).

Ok so you are all think why did he go through this long a$$ story? well it was to ask a rather simple question. when im having the other work done should i have them cut off the 3.5" tip and just do 2.5" pipe for the tip? would this help with the loudness? any ideas what it would do with the sound? im not to worried about how its looks. I just want the car to be reasonably quiet and to not have a high pitched "ricey" sound to it. so i guess what would the replacement of my current 3.5" diameter x 7" long tip with a 2.5" diameter tip do to the sound of the car? i know that this is basically how trucks are setup. would this work on our cars? Please remember there is not a cat and that i really dont know if i have the funds to put one on unless you can suggest one for under 100 bucks. I know not having the cat makes the car louder but i was just wondering what you guys thought/ could tell me.

Re: exhaust questions

if i were you i would of just bought the mid pipe and front pipe to turn your megan axel-back into a catback. I've had my megan cat back for over two years and ever loves it. It has a nice deep sound even at wot. anyways I wouldn't cut the tip off it would just look silly and wouldn't make much of a sound difference. Just have it welded up and attached properly and invest in a silencer just if you need to evade the police. good luck and next time don't buy an ebay muffler. (I'm on a college budget too so always check for sale forums and meganracing.com for deals!)
