I'm probably not going to be able to help you, but I'm guessing that your going to need to give a little more info as this can be caused by many things. manuel/automatic? rough in gear/neutral? Have you done anything lately like change the spark plugs?

Cheapest thing I think could just be you need a new air filter. When's the last time you changed that?

Manual

The car is a manual and it runs rough when im just ideling in neutral when i am moving it runs fine but it feels like it is being robbed of power. My gas mileage has also became very bad lately. I put a cold air intake in the car about 4 months ago but this problem just started about a week and a half ago. I just changed the oil about 2 weeks ago so maybe he banged up the spark plug wires.

My friends been having the same problem on 96 ex, his idles up and down at stop lights. We may have figured it out this last weekend, when we tried to install a throttle body spacer on my 96, we installed it but when we started it, it would idle to 4000 and after 15 sec. drop to 2500 and go between there and 3500. Finally after trieing to figure it out, we said fu&& it and took it off, and just replaced the gasket, still when we started it, it would do thesame thing. Then i didn't know whatto do so i took the original gasket and put it back in, and no problem. So you may want to check your throuttle body gasket. We've tried new idle air control valve, no luck, so hopefully this will work.
Hope it helps later

i've read that when the idle goes up and down, it has to do with the throttle... it needs to be replaced... as far as i know

try fuel injector cleaner, or a whole fuel system cleaner. its like $5 a bottle. it worked on my cx. it would get rough and seem to get bogged down at idle. this seemed to help solve most of the problem.

Re: 1995 Civic DX rough idle what causes it and how to fix

i got a 1.3 civic glacier and mine did exactly the same whenever i pulled up at a junction or whatever it wud idle really rough and sometimes even cut out completely, i stripped down the carb and it was the vacum hose it wont be spark plugs or anything like that because its only when the cars idling if it was the sparks or anything it would misfire when driving casually aswell, not just when idling or at low rev speed. also check that your power steering fluid's topped up as there's another vacuum on the servo which can affect this too. hope this helps

Try cleaning out the throttle body, also clean out the sensors, if that doesn't work then u should check for a vacuum leak

Actually the map sensor should just throw a code but thers also the air idel control valve, cold start valve but mine just needed a tune up. Ill look on all data but i remeber seeing a tsb for that.

Map- manifold absoulute pressure sensor
Maf- mass air flow sensor

Check all your hoses for a vacuum leak.

Try bleeding your cooling system, if there is a air bubble it will make the thermostat read inconsistent numbers.

Re: 1995 Civic DX rough idle what causes it and how to fix

SOLVED

My 1993 honda civic started to have rough idle out of nowhere. Shaking and turning off in signal. Starting rpm revving up and down. Sometimes runs fine for a while.

Firtuanetly I have a same year honda I was using for parts.
I started replacing one stuff after other in hope of fixing it.. Checked vaccum leaks, Spark plusgs changed, map sensor changed, tps changed, iac changed, throttle body changed, fuel filter changed, fuel injectors changed, fuel rail changed, oxygen sensor changed, air filter changed, mas changed,.... Some stuff made it look and sound better but didn't fix the issue.. Checked the timing was okay. Checked for sparks.. There was sparks.

At the end decided to change the distributor.. Never though that was the issue.. But it fixed it... Suddenly no more issues...

Re: 1995 Civic DX rough idle what causes it and how to fix

My 1995 Honda Civic was doing the same thing. After replacing the plugs, wires, new battery, distributor cap and rotor the problem was a bad catalytic converter. Baffle collapsed inside and blocked the exhaust. Causing the car to run poorly. Went to my local muffler guy. Got an after market converter and happy days are here again !! Hope this helps.
