1995 Civic Starting problems

I have a 95 civic with a 1.5, 5Spd. I have a brand new main relay, good fuel pump, (pump comes on when jumped), good spark, and a good ign switch (already tested), fuses ok (underhood and dash), Have good power and ground to relay main relay only clicks once when key is "ON II" been having too much trouble with this car, had it for about a month and started having an intermittent starting issue which led me to replace the main relay, and now i cant get it to run again, OK while i was typing this the key was on and the relay decided to click and i just started the car, BUT this is not the first time this has happened to me sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesnt, no matter how hot or how cold it is it just happens randomly.

Sorry for the huge write up i am at witts end and need help! any info is greatly appreciated!

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Check the ground wires on the thermostat housing.....

See if you can find someone with a good ECM to try in it. Just a hunch.

The PCM operates the main relay, but it needs good grounds to do that. Most of the grounds are on the stat housing, so unless you bumped a loose connection I doubt your removing the dist cap had anything to do with it.

Why did you have the key on while messing with the distributor? Good way to get zapped.

Found a good PCM to try yet?

Re: 1995 Civic Starting problems

yea good way to get zapped Haha im so frustrated that i didnt even think about it but ive been zapped by a dist. before..... but all day throughout the day i went outside and tried 4-5 different times and the relay would click on, and fire the fuel pump after about a 5-10 second delay and the car would start and run, until just a minute ago i tried again and the fuel pump would not come on even after waiting a few minutes with the key on. Still bumfuzzled. Still havent found anyone with the same generation pcm/ecu

Also the ground connection at the thermostat housing is tight and clean.

Re: 1995 Civic Starting problems

Open up the ECU, got any leaking capacitors?

Just an example, they don't have to be leaking that bad to be a problem.

Quick google came up with several items about bad ECM/ECUs.
Here's one

I guessed at a cause based on the symptoms you described. You could monitor stuff at the main relay to see that the ECM is really not turning it on at the correct times....that requires more research and work and equipment.

and will you be online tomorrow?
I usually check in at some point daily but I can't be on 24/7. I have a job and all that.

Re: 1995 Civic Starting problems

Make sure that all power is going to all electrical system.

Have you ever checked the output signals from starer motor?

If it doesn't get enough voltage ,starter motor will not work( if there is no problem on starter motor you can just hear clicking sound without cranking.)

I am not sure that your civic has those sensors.. you need to check..

MAP,MAF, CKP , IAT or Idling sensor.

If one of those sensor does not work, it can also effect on your stating problem.

If you have DMM or lab scope, then you need to back probe each sensors then see the result or signal waves.

You can see the values or signal waves for each sensors on google.

Or i guess you can find those result on out forum
