1st - 5th Gen Honda Civic As these Honda Civics get older and older they become harder to find in great condition and less popular to modify. By no means does this make them less of a contender on the track or car audio competition. Don't forget the roots of what made import tuning what it has become today.

Head gasket or stuck/bent valve?

'90 Civic EX with D16A6. Just got it running well, and ran it out to a buddy's house the other day. Ran the 20 minutes on the freeway to his house and now it's running rough again at idle. Able to drive it home. Checked compression, and #2 has zero. Took off the valve cover, and cranked it over. Valves all seemed to be opening and closing fine from what I could see. Oil is clean, and there is no white smoke blowing from the tailpipe. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm getting ready to go tear it down now To remove this ad, register today for free or log in if already registered!

Re: Head gasket or stuck/bent valve?

any coolant being burned off? you can still have headgasket leak without white smoke. if you are burning coolant and its not dripping anywhere, chances are headgasket has a small leak. if you tear the head off, be sure to get it tested for compression, cleaned up, and milled if the surface is warped. machine shop can do it all for around $100. that way you know you are putting in a working head.

Re: Head gasket or stuck/bent valve?

Head gasket turned out to be fine. #2 had a chunk missing from one of the exhaust valves. Must have gone out with the exhaust because it's not in the cylinder. Anybody know if I need new head bolts when I rebuild? I know some imports required them. not sure on this one as I have not received my manual from Helm yet. Thanks

Re: Head gasket or stuck/bent valve?

yeah you always need new bolts. and theres a very specific multi-step tightening procedure and order. should be in the manual youre getting.
