1999, 2000 or 2001

I am looking to purchase one of these year models. I am looking for a manual.

A couple of things. What year did they start adding the hook child restraints. I know mpg are neglible for these three years. I previously regularly got 43 to 44 mpg out of my 97 automatic civic with slight hypermiling.

My question, which drive trains last the longest out of these three years. Are there any major problems I am not aware of? I will be looking to purchase from an adult for obvious reasons. What kind of mileage is too much to purchase? I only commute 44 miles a day with little weekend driving. I am really pretty mechanically inclined an am looking for something I can get 5 years out of. I am open to a 2001 model as well depending on price. What should I be looking to spend?

you should check out KBB for fair prices for all the models and you might be able to find the child info there too. Besides that if you need to drive alot its always good to buy a car or any car under 150,000 miles because usauly beyond that point is when cars start to stop working. just make sure the car you buy is in good condition inside and out.

Re: 1999, 2000 or 2001

01 is when they started with the LATCH system.

All the years are reliable with the majority of people probably saying the 6th gen is more then the 7th (01-05). With that being said my 01 has been very reliable and I am almost at 200k miles. 01-05 have know head gasket issues (I have a lucky one).

If you mechanically inclined then you should have no issues doing maintence and fixes to either generation.

Re: 1999, 2000 or 2001

hahaha, golnat, 2nd poster revived an old thread, but hey, it's added info if someone comes here to read it.

therefore, 01 have more autotrans issues.
01 also lost the dual wishbone suspension, but should not affect normal drivers, mostly performance driver (not show car, or the "I think i am race driver" crowds, though).
macPherson struts on 01 are plenty good for normal drivers, included the "I Think i am race driver"

The 01 is larger, but heavier as well.

^ That's debatable!

:-) that's what if figured, added info could be helpful.

4 and half month old thread isn't too bad of a resurrection.

Re: 1999, 2000 or 2001

huh, true, just saw the 2014 and thought it was a year old, but 2015 is stillborn - lots of pollen here in NC (here for the week :P)

stock 99, don't make me regret not having the 6th gen... the 6th gen hatch and the CRX can put 5 large wheel/tires in the trunk, i can't fit more than three stock sized in the coupe... one need to go into the cabin... a sedan can fit all, though... and the MacPherson does really understeer in autoX races.

Re: 1999, 2000 or 2001

Hi, bumping the thread, too....since, I have a question. Does the # of kms matter much to you? Here, most are between 250K and 300 (or more).

I think the condition of the body might be a bit more important? For e.g., less rust means less repairs probably?

I'm only considering 5spd Civics (and Accords).

Lastly, what are the main things to look for?

Re: 1999, 2000 or 2001

Mileage (kms) is always important when you buy a car. Obviously a lot more wear all over on high mileage cars (engine, transmission, drivetrain, suspension, etc) so more likely things are worn out. I have seen lots of Civic's in the 300 000 km range but rarely have I ever seen one 400 000 + if that tells you anything.

Rust concerns are different depending on where you live Texas, California not so much....Canada more so. I live in Western Canada..cars last forever...Eastern Canada not so much.

6th gens (1996-2000) probably had the highest customer satisfaction to date. Hardest thing about buying one now would be finding one that hasn't been hacked up.

There's a thread going right now for pre purchase inspection for 7th gen (2001-2005)
