98 lx d16y7 to y8 head

I got a 98 with a d16y7 I wanna put the y8 head on. So far I got the head, intake, throttle body, p2p ecu, and a full wiring harness from a ex. Curious what else I'll need to make this work. Any mods I might have to make. And is it worth the time and money to do it. At the very least imma put the intake on but I'm unsure about the whole mini swap. All info and advice would be nice.

Why's that?

When I first bought my Civic I looked into all the fun things I could do to it including the mini me swap. It seems it's probably the biggest HP gain for the Y7 engine...essentially turning it into a Y8. If you have the tools, the confidence and the skills to change a head gasket then it should be easy. Seems that you already have the parts you need.

I haven't done it myself but I googled the info last night and it's readily available online. Some people debate over whether you need to add a knock sensor and use the Y8 injectors but it's your car I guess you need to make those decisions for yourself.

I didn't do it to mine because it's my daily driver and 1st priority for me is reliable transportation and good mpg. Someday though I will be just my fun toy when I have another DD.

Re: 98 lx d16y7 to y8 head

Yea doing head gaskets ain't nothing. I've done them before. I know it will pretty much bolt right on. But I'm not sure if I had everything I needed or not. When I do the swap it's gunna be a one day thing cuz it is my daily driver but I want some more power from it. I looked for the knock sensor based off the location of the y8 setup and it looks like I already have a knock sensor on my y7 block. Why i dont kno it doesn't make any sense for me to have one since my valves ain't variable. But it looks like it's already there. But I was also curious what kind of gains to expect to see if it's worth the money. I still need head gasket, timing belt water pump, new exhaust manifold, manifold gasket, intake gaskets, throttle body gasket, a new air intake, etc all the little ****. But that little **** will add up. Since I got all the other parts from a friend I haven't paid for them yet and can return them if I don't do the swap.

Re: 98 lx d16y7 to y8 head

Statistically there is a 20 hp difference from the y7 to the y8. Most people who report hp gains are using their butt dyno which is notoriously unreliable.

If I needed to do a head gasket replacement I would definitely consider it but otherwise I'm a 'if it's not broken don't fix it' kind of guy.

?!?

pardon my ignorance on older gen, but what does a knock sensor have to do, directly to the Vtec? knock sensor have direct relation to the ignition timing, VTEC gets involved, as with everything else, but it does not relate directly.

Re: 98 lx d16y7 to y8 head

Hey my name is thamas, I have had my 1990 civic hatch for a little over a year, it has a D16Y7 head and i scored it for 1500 with a fresh rebuilt motor 70,000km original (give or take) on the bottom end and the intake manifold but since the donor motor was from a scrap yard the head was gone already... (my brother built the car, hes a Honda specialist but knows nothing about turbo's") so it has original head with over 330,000km. the car itself is in awesome shape, absolutely no rust, a like-new interior, a fresh paint job as of a month ago, new brakes on front and new winter tires all around when i got it and Ive only put 13000km on it since.car runs awesome, doesn't burn oil and i get 450 if im hard on it and 660 to a tank if im highway driving only. its a fun car and i want it to go faster. its an si so any honda lover knows its the better body style because of the motor 1.6L over the more common 1.5 and the suspension system is much better. ok soo i just picked up another civ for yet another 1500, but this ones much diff.. its a 93 for starters, body has been crashed 3 times, so its toast.. the rest of it tho.. it has rims in ok shape and a lowering kit, and it had a D16Z6 motor with a cam'd head. b and m clutch, lightened flywheel with around 5000km on them along with the cam (all were installed same time) upgraded AEM inline fuel pump + regulator, a fuel return line, GT turbo, k&n air intake, header and 3 inch inflow-outflow 7 inch tall intercooler with 3 inch pluming.. chipped ecu all with around 36000km soo getting up there but still all works Great, tranny is in ok shape but been run hard, its a good spair i guess. car hits over 200, 180 with ease but any higher its gotta kinda work.. theres the info of what i have ok..
I want to change that y7 head out for the vtec z6 but i dont want the z6 block.. its toast.. 353780km on it mostly original to car.... but the heads been rebuilt on the z6 when the cam was installed..... my research has told me to do a swap i need a jump harness for a obd1 to obd2 i believe? correct me if im wrong, so i swap the ecu's, get new gaskets for head and intake, arp head studs, can i then just put the z6 head onto car? the gaskets look the same for both intake and head.. i then want to keep the newer y7 intake if i just unbolt it i can set it against fire wall as i swap heads and do all of that without unhooking anything from the intake.... But what i do not know is is that intake compatible with the z6 head and ecu or do i need to use the z6 intake? if so ive read its better to use a y7 intake? i could just find one if need be but id rather not because right now i have minimal into these two cars and i don't want to spend a **** ton more.. if i can just swap everything its some time and around $350 max.... could have it all done in about 3 days or less by myself. I don't know when my brother built the car if he did put beefery guts in lower end or not... but im not getting rods and pistons cuz i dont have 300 for that or more and im not making more then 3lbs of boost so it doesn't dramatically kill my fuel econ or put me at near as much risk as the 7 its running atm..... (on the tired D16Z6 bottom end)every time i pass someone.. will i break something if i use my y7 intake will my ecu work properly with it... do i need to re-tune the ecu? well you have my info let me know can i use my y7 intake with z6 head and ecu also if their is Anything at all i missed Please do add im not a mechanic im just an enthusiast..
thamas bell on FB or thamasbell@hotmail.com

in the end i want a d16y7 block and bottom end, z6 cammed head and ecu, y7 intake, upgraded clutch/ flywheel, turbo kit, fuel system, inter cooler system, suspension system, rims, then its time to buy New rumbers cuz the treds on the rims are burnt off... will this work all together or am i going about this all wrong? cuz i do have a b18 motor that i got for free with the 93 turbo civ when i bought it for 1500, but it needs a tranny and its a stock motor with around 95,000km to 110,000km (he had two sold one cant remember km's) could make turbo work with it n all but then id need engine mounts, an ecu jumper harness, and a **** load more ****.
