Best ways to increase MPG?

Hey guys, this is my very first post. I popped my post cherry!

Anyways, I just bought a 2000 Hatch as a commuter car and I just want to get the best MPG possible. I already know a few ways:

-Weight reduction (obvious)
-Intake (less strain on engine)
-Lightweight pulleys (less strain on engine)
-Port & Polish (less strain on engine)
-Performance radiator (cooler operating temps)
-Lowering springs (aerodynamics)

Any other ideas? Also keep in mind, I want to spend as little money as possible. Nothing too fancy. Plus I don't want to do anything with the exhaust, to keep noise down (MAAAAAAAYBE headers).

You don't need to buy anything....

I drive a bone stock '99 Civic coupe and regularly get 40+ mpg with it. You driving habits are probably the biggest factor. There are a bunch of threads in this forum that do discuss MPG but here are a few of the highlights...

- extra weight
- low rpm driving (anything over 3000rpm is costing gas mileage)
- tires and tire pressure
- proper and regular maintence (oil/filter, air filter, plugs etc)

and intake/headers/exhaust will actually decrease your MPG

Didn't really notice a decrease in my car... it was the higher ethanol fuels that killed my MPG!

Re: Best ways to increase MPG?

Do not spend $ on these things, your vehicle MPG is in your hands, how you drive your vehicle and tire pressure and proper maintenance will increase vehicle MPG.

Re: Best ways to increase MPG?

You guys are right. After browsing through some of the project cars on Ecomodder, apparently warmer engine temps are what help mileage. Not to mention that the primary way I've seen people accomplishing this is through aerodynamics. Looks like I'll have to totally refocus my project lol
