Hi, I am new to this forum. I just bought a 2000 Civic EX (clean car, low miles, perfect condition). It has the stock 185 x 65 x 14 tires on it. I will be using this car as a daily driver but I want to make some suspension (strut tower brace & rear sway bar) and tire upgrades. Can I put 205 x 50 x 16 tires on this car (without any concern of rubbing under any normal condition). I realize that people have put much large tires on these (but at what cost). My inclination is to stick with the 195 x 55 x 15 size, but going to the 205's would look so much nicer. Does anyone have any first hand experience here? Thanks for the help.
I'm running American Racing 15" Aero wheels with Nitto NT-450 205/50s on a 97 Civic HB. It's the same generation as your car so it should work for you as well. I only get a little rubbing when turning the wheel all the way to the left or right. I'm riding on the stock suspension (not lowered IOW).
Be careful about adding sway bars unless you know for sure how it will effect the over/under steering on your car.
Thanks for the info. I will likely go with the 195/55/15; I really don't ever want any rubbing. As for the sway bar how will know unless I put it on. I will leave the front one stock. In the rear I was planning on using a 19mm bar.
Well yes, I now have 185/65/14 if I go to 195/55/15 that would mean I need differant rims. I would love to get 205/45/16 but I am afraid of rubbing. Especially if I lower the car by 1.5". The 15" rims will work well, I don't want to build a race car, just a really good highway car... The car is 100% stock now, I want to make sure I thoink it all through.
Thanks, that's good to know. One of my concerns is that I would like to lower the car by 1.5". I'm still thinking about which way to go on this one. The lowered suspension and wheels will be the last thing I do, so I have a bit of time. If I ran into a great deal on 16" or 17" rims, that would effect which way I go. Thanks for the info.
I just went from stock 14" tires and wheels with cheap Michelin Pilot's to alloy's with 195/60/15 Falken Ziex. The tires are a bit taller than they should be so there's a little speedometer error. However, the ride is fantastic. Quiet and smooth. I couldn't believe the improvement.
When I switched from a big American sedan to the Civic, I was delighted with the stock Civic handling. If you can improve it, that's fine. For a driver, it is more than adequate. Quality tires are a must. Anything else may sacrifice ride quality although excellent handling makes it a joy to drive.
