How to Determine Engine.

Hi i bought what i thought was a 1996 civic ex, But when i met with the guy he said he had put a 1998 civic engine in it due to a crack in the block. and it has a very play cylinder head. gray with honda on it. Someone told me that a ex civic had to be replaced with another ex engine. He also said that EX civics where VTEC's. I was wondering how to tell if it is a VTEC. And should i N/A tune it seeing as im a moderate tuner? To remove this ad, register today for free or log in if already registered!

Re: How to Determine Engine.

I'm not understanding what you are all saying, but there is a stamp at the front of the block (next to the transmission) that has the engine code displayed. Find that code and you will know what engine was swapped in and no it didn't have to be a VTEC engine.

Also look on the timing cover for a white sticker that has the code printed on it.

Re: How to Determine Engine.

Have you found the engine code? It should be D16y8 (for stock SOHC VTEC 96-00).
