revs only until 4000rpm?

i have an a/t civic 2000.

is it normal that when i rev my engine (in neutral), it only goes up until 4000rpm? after reaching 4K rpm, it automatically "shifts" up.

if it's not normal, what might be the problem?

how does it shift gears in neutral? im confused. it may be a safety feature so you dont damage the engine revving that high without load.

LOL my car confuses me too. Its like this: im in neutral i rev it but when it reaches 4000, it doesnt go any higher than that. There's something that kicks in and throws me back to 3500 rpm.

The same thing happens when i drive too. I cant go beyond 4000 rpm. I cant do a red line run...

yeah its normal, so you dont mess up the engine. its a type of safety feature.
