1999 Civic SI (Canadian) auto issue

Hi Folks,

I just picked up a 99 auto Civic SI (or EX to you americans) with approx 113000km on it. Runs very well but I've noticed a strange issue with the car. Whenever I start the car and go from park -> reverse or to drive and start getting on the gas (seems to happen at about 1500rpm) i hear this strange whirring or almost like a grinding noise for a second. It then goes away and I never hear it again. I have had it come back while driving a few times after hitting a nasty pothole...but again it's there for a second, then goes away.

The car drives fine and I've tried to re-create the noise, but it only happens after the car has been shut off and started again.

The noise comes from under the center console it seems...which led me to believe it may be tranny related? My father has 2000 civic auto and I've noticed the noise on his as well, just not as loud as mine.

Any ideas??
