Hi all. I was just wondering if any of you had ever used dynamat or anything like that on your 6th gen. And if so, what were the results? Good? Bad? Ugly? Just curious cause my 97 is very road noisy and I was looking to quieten it up some.

there was recently a thread about this. the most difference is doing the doors and rear deck where speakers are. but dynamat is not a sound absorbing material, only a deadening pad. so it will decrease panel resonance but not road noise. basically, dynamat will make speakers sound better but will not insulate outside noises. you need a composite material for that like a foam sheet. best result is from applying dynamat and foam together. but you would need to do the entire car to see results and often its much easier and cheaper to just buy a quieter tire.

Yeah, like he said... the best way would probably just to get quieter tires. I stuck some dynamat in my doors and it didn't seem to do much... not really worth it in the end.
I've added sound deadener all around my 6X9's and in the trunk, mainly on the roof of the trunk. It helped tremendously to rid that area of rattles but if your trying to quiet up the interior your in for a lot of disappointment. I haven't come across anyone who was successful in improving the ride quality that way. If the road noise bothers you, then invest in a good sound system and crank it up
Well, I think it may be, that you just have to take it a step farther with a civic. Like going ahead and removing the whole interior, (minus the dash) and Dynamat it. Even under the head liner. Then put that sheet of sound deadening closed-cell foam on top of all the DynaMat that you did. Then, get that door silencing stuff from the Cascade company, that goes under your door panels. Then, do the whole trunk, like you did. Then, spray that rubberized sound deadening undercoating under the wheel wells, and under the rest of the car as well. I bet if you took all those extra steps, you could get a quiet ride out of a 6th gen. You can even buy tires that are designed to be less road noisy. Then again, you would be spending about $900 to do all this. So you would need to really love your civic lol. And not be planning on selling it within the next 5 years, to make it worthwhile.

I haven't ever done a civic, but i stripped the entire interior out of my ranger and did 2 solid layers (in some places 4) of second skin's higher end sound deadener. It made a huge difference, night and day. I just bought another ranger (now I have 2) and the second truck is just a beater for the winter (no s/d inside) and it is like driving a noisey garbage truck compared to my show truck.

some photos of what your up against... a ranger is probably much easier than a civic. You can get the headliner out of a ranger without having to remove the glass.
I spent about 80 hours working on this for the truck, remember there is alot less sheetmetal to do on a truck cab as opposed to a car interior.

did you watch the video? Detrimming and retrimming a vehicle to bare body takes a long time if you catalog where things go and do it carefully so nothing is broken. I'm happy to say I came out unscathed with the exception of having to buy a few new clips and pushpins here and there. It's so quiet sometimes I forget to shift. I'll be on the highway in 3rd or 4th going 60mph and all of a sudden notice my RPMs are way up because I'm not in 5th.
