98 DX dash light

Just bought a 98 DX and I noticed that the heater control panel was not illuminated at night. The instrument cluster was lit along with the rear defroster and hazard switches.

Is there a bulb behind the heater control panel and does anyone know the easiest way to change it?

Could it simply be a fuse? The aftermarket stereo that is currently installed does not work, so I'm not sure if that is of any use in the diagnosis.

Thanks in advance.

Re: 98 DX dash light

Have you checked your fuses? It sounds like one might be blown. If not, consult the owner's manual to determine which fuse(s) would operate your dash lighting and/or stereo. They'll be located in the fusebox inside the cabin, which is located below and to the left of the steering wheel, towards the bottom of the dash. There's a small plastic panel covering it which pops off. You will be able to see if the fuse is blown after pulling it and looking at it.

If it's not a fuse - have you had the alternator checked? My alternator began to fail on my 98 dx and, although the stereo worked, the light behind the fan speed switch would occasionally go out or fail to turn on when the car was started, only to randomly turn on later. This problem went away when I replaced the alternator. (Note: the alternator malfunction light didn't come on even though the alternator wasn't working.)

If neither of these is the culprit, perhaps pull the aftermarket stereo and make sure none of the wires are being shorted/frayed insulation/etc?
