2004 Si, 108k miles

I replaced all the hydraulics (master and slave, blew out lines with brake cleaner) on the car probably 6 months or a year ago. Starting this weekend the clutch wont fully disengage when the car is in gear. It will still change gears and everything fine, but if I hit the gas hard in any gear the RPMs will spike and the car will just slowly speed up. The clutch burning smell is also pretty bad too as another obvious sign.

I bled the hydraulics again just in case there was any air in the system. Made no difference.

I am fairly sure it is the throw out bearing, but if the whole transmission has to be separated from the engine the clutch might as well be done too.

I would normally be brave enough to tackle this job myself, but it is getting colder and the days are much shorter now and we cant really be without two driveable cars for very long.

Anyone have an idea what it should cost to get a clutch and flywheel replaced? I live in northern VA, close to DC so the labor costs are higher than other places.

Any thoughts on what else it could be that would be an easier fix? Definitely not a fluid leak, the reservoir hasnt changed level since I replaced the hydraulics.

No shortcuts or bandaids there, it's slipping under load.


No idea on price here, I don't do numbers and price varies widely.

Do pick someone qualified and competent to do the work, you DO want someone that will stand behind their work and you DON'T want Mr. Goodpliers in there hacking your ride.

That is a slipping clutch. You need a new one, and pressure plate, and flywheel and throw out bearing.

It could be kinda pricey. Go to a non-dealer Honda specialist to save money, the dealer will guaranteed be more expensive. A transmission specialist might also be a good place to look.

I would get a heavy duty clutch plate and disk for normal driving. Or something more if you like to race it.
