D17a2 vtec engagement Static?

Hi I am not completely new to hondas but far from being a pro. With that being said I understand 85% of how vtec works and until earlier today I thought I understood 100% of how vtec works, even the vtec-e which is in my beloved 7th gen d17a2. But today that all got called into question when I installed a vtec light. When the light was installed, I was able to see that my car engages into vtec at 3200 rpm in first gear (like the specs say it should) but then in all the other gears it engages at 2400ish rpms. But wait there's even more, 5th gear will then disengage at 2800 rpms randomly. Then to top it all off sometimes a random gear will choose to engage at the correct 3200 rpm instead of the 2400 it usually engages at. Any thoughts that might help me know whats happening?

i dont think its ONLY RPM that dictates when it will engage, there are other factors like throttle position

Re: D17a2 vtec engagement Static?

Thanks for your reply. I have read about it being more than rpm. From what I've read it includes speed(over 20mph), oil pressure, temp of oil and engine, and throttle position(open atleast 50%). The way I took it though is that all the variables had to be met for vtec to engage. Is this not the case and if it is not the case then why doesnt my vtec engage at say 2000 rpms when I just floor it?
