Oil leaking on timing cover

Hi guys,

I have a 2004 Civic Si with 250,000 km.
I have oil leaking on the timing covers and the cam end plug.

I loose about 1 quart of oil per 5000 kms (which is not that bad).

The dealer said that I should replace the timing belt and cam & crank seals, cam end plug and valve cover gasket.

To replace the cam end plug they will need to open the valve cover. I seen on youtube, that you can do it without removing the valve cover but the plastic could break and fall in the engine (too risky for me).

So to do the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, cam and crank seals, cam end plug and valve cover gasket. The Honda dealer quoted me $1000.

$750 for the timing belt, water pump and thermostat (4 hrs labour).
$250 for the cam end plug and valve cover gasket (2 hr labour).

Is the price reasonable for a Honda dealer?

Re: Oil leaking on timing cover

The thermostat is pretty easy. The cam end plug on mine was very easy. It was leaking, so it wasn't a very tight seal, pried right out with a flat blade.
The valve cover gasket isn't hard. Once you know what you have to remove, it's easy. Replace the spark plug tube seals too. Use Honda bond. (if you DIY )
But the valve cover has to come off to replace the timing belt, etc. It should be the cost of the gasket, seals plus a little labor. $1000 for all that, with genuine Honda parts seems like a good price to me.

sounds reasonable to me,

i would get this done ASAP, your timing belt is probably covered in oil, which is not a good thing, could cause it to snap very prematurely
