2001 honda transmission case gasket

I recently rebuilt my 2001 EX AT BMXA transmission and the kit came with two paper gaskets to seal the case. I ended up tearing one, and the other had a tang that wasn't the same. So, i decided to order a new OEM one. This one looked very similar to the one that I scrapped off (green and very tough material, much stronger than the paper gasket that came in the rebuild kit). I noticed the new OEM one had one side was white and the other was green. At first I thought the white material was some kind of adhesive that needed to be removed before installation, but it wouldn't pull away and I didn't want to damage another gasket so I just installed it. The rebuilt tranny was and isr unning great (600+ miles), but I noticed at the seam where the new gasket ATF fluid has started to leak and gotten much worse over the last few hundred miles. Now i took extreme care making sure I didn't scratch the two mating surfaces (used a plastic scraper), and cleaned both sides complete of oldgasket material, and used a torque wrench all 14 mm bolts to 33 ft/lbs in a crisscross pattern. So did I mess up by not peeling off the white layer, or any ideas what I could have done wrong? Has anyone ever had success using RTV or silicone sealant on this joint?
