Rep Power: 0 Can I stop my auto trans shifter from going into neutral when it's on drive?
2004 Civic EX, Automatic Transmission.
When I put the shifter in D if I push forward on stick it will go into N. I assume this is intended and I didn't think much about it until I accidentally hit it. I'm concerned now a pet or someone might do it at some point when I'm on the highway. Probably unfounded but still.
Is there any way to make sure the shifter only goes forward into N by depressing the lock on the shifter? Or is there no way for safety reasons (eg the accelerator gets stuck or something)?
Thanks

Even if you push it into neutral on the highway, nothing bad will happen......I've hit it before. The engine might rev a bit, but its not like you are manually shifting down to 2nd gear at 70mph or anything bad.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

IDK why, but it just is.

It's also a safety feature. Remember how Toyota had those "stuck" accelerator problems? If your accelerator got stuck for whatever reason, you could shift into neutral from any gear, which would allow you to coast without accelerating so you don't end up killing yourself. Unless you have a pretty big dog thats freaking out in the front seat, I wouldn't worry about it very much. Just don't drive around with your hand on the shifter either.

yep aint gonna hurt anything to shift into neutral i mean unless you bounce it off the rev limiter for like 2 minutes lol.
