Trouble with reverse on manual trany

I've had this problem for a while but now it's basically unbearable. Every gear is perfect except (R)everse. I've read a couple threads on putting the car in first then shifting to reverse, that doesn't seem to help at all. I checked the brake fluid which was full...unless I'm mistaken we have hydraulic slave cylinder? I've never had an issue with just reverse before in any car so my thoughts are either the trany, the clutch, or the slave? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Trouble with reverse on manual trany

Have you tried putting the shifter in neutral, releasing the clutch pedal, then pushing in the clutch pedal and shifting into reverse?

Yes I've been trying the double clutch, doesn't really seem to be affecting it much. It almost feels like there needs to be another half inch of throw to get it to reverse that just isn't there.

Yeah this problem is notorious. Honda makes good engines, not transmissions.

My reverse sometimes does not catch sometimes, so I put it into reverse once, then neutral, then reverse again to make sure it is engaged. You can hear it engaging properly.

Re: Trouble with reverse on manual trany

Reverse gear doesn't have any synchros. Are you trying to shift into reverse while moving backwards already? Either shift in while standing perfectly still or else you would have to rev match perfectly. Otherwise I've found that it takes a little bit more force to get into reverse than the other gears. Once in a while you can feel it not going into gear all the way (Like 1/20 of the time) so just take it out and push it back in. Other than that-not much you can do. You could try flashing the manual transmission fluid

I changed the MTF in mine a few weeks ago and it shifted into reverse like melted butter... for the rest of that day. The reverse issue is probably just our cross to bear as Civic owners. ;-)

Re: Trouble with reverse on manual trany

I have an 01' and it also doesn't shift into reverse very well. Like the other person said you can hear it when it finally goes in. Usually have to shift from second to reverse a couple of times. UGH.
