Rep Power: 0 Whinning Niose from CVT
I just bought a 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid and there is a whinning noise coming fromt he CVT transmission when I put it in D. The previous owner said he it had made this noise for the enetire time he has owned it (90K to 120K miles). He may not have been completly truthful!!! What could it be???
Addational info:
The transmission does not shift smoothly and the auto stop rarely works. I had to replace the head gasket as soon as I bought it. The engine is good.

Have you done a drain and fill? I did one every third oil change when I had my hybrid. After a drain and fill, spend two minutes slowly going through all of the gears with your brake on. I put 265000 km on mine before I sold it. I was afraid of the battery going so I sold it and got a 2005 with only 29000km. Good luck

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: Whinning Niose from CVT
Autostop only happens when all of the computers think conditions are all correct to allow it.
A CVT transmission is not like any other. Certain noises are normal and expected.
If you really think it isn't right, find an identical car and compare-- before you think yours has a problem.
It's probably fine.
The wrong fluid in the CVT trans can make them do strange things.
Make sure to use only the correct Honda CVT fluid from a Honda dealer.
These do NOT take ordinary ATF. If the fluid looks like red trans fluid, it's probably wrong.

I changed the transmission fluid yesteday with the Honda CVT fluid and I still hear the whining noise. I still have the "jerk" when I start to accelerate from a dead stop. I don't know if the Idle stop and the transmission "Jerk" are related.

Did you get it to do the idle stop?
Some noise is normal. I can't hear what you are talking about though, so I can't say if what you hear is normal or not.
A certain "jerk" is normal, you will never get rid of that because it really is a clutch that engages as you take off from a stop. Just like a manual trans uses a clutch.
But a shudder upon takeoff is not supposed to happen. Many do shudder and some people don't complain about it though.
Find an identical car to compare.
Take it to a Honda dealer and ask a seasoned tech to go for a quick ride, see if your concerns are normal for that car or not.
