Rep Power: 0 Looking to buy used civic - advice?
Hey all, this is a first time post. I am looking for a decent, inexpensive commuter car to use while I am in grad school. So, naturally I have been looking for a Civic, since they have a great reputation for durability, reliability, gas mileage, etc. I am currently considering a 2002 civic coupe, automatic with 100k + miles on it. The body is in excellent condition, tires brand new. I am a bit concerned that a transmission may be an issue down the road since this is an automatic. I also can't drive stick.
What should I be looking for when test driving and inspecting this car? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

The early EM2 autos are notorious for transmission problems. Ask the owner if any transmission work has been done to the car. Also the timing belt needs to be changed every 100k. So I would ask about those 2 things.
To protect yourself, bring the car to a trusted shop and have them give the car a once over. It will cost you a few bucks, but they will be able to find things your eyes will miss.
Finally, I would run a carfax report to see if the car has had any major incidents. If the car is at a dealership, they should be able to give you a free carfax.
