2001 LX head removal
I had an interesting and bad failure on my car the other day and am trying to find a guide for removing my head on my D17A1. If anyone has one, i would love to see it otherwise i am just going to dive right in like i normally would. And just in case anyone wants to know, somehow, the #4 spark plug came loose enough to be blown out and the threads are too messed up to repair so i am removing the head. Thanks.

Just a slight correction.. If you have an LX, you have a D17A1 (non-vtec).. Unless you did an -a2 engine swap, then I stand corrected.
In any case, these links should help you out

I just took mine off this past weekend and have only got 100 miles on the new gasket so far. I was going to take pictures and write all steps down but once I got my hands in there, I wasn't about to pick up the Nikon.
If you've never done it before, read up first. It's a little tricky but not impossible. Label screws, bolts, and nuts with tape and where they go back to. You'll want the new gasket (if not a head gasket set). You'll of course need new oil and filter to put back in and water for radiator. Mark your timing chain with a big yellow grease pen or something. That is crucial to it running right after it's all together. Those teeth need to meet up where they did before. And most importantly, RENT OR BUY A GOOD TORQUE WRENCH!!!! I'll get back on and post the torque specs but if you go crazy with a ratchet wrench, that head is going to warp like crazy! Other than the tools, all I had was a chilton and haynes (pretty much the same book) repair manual.
If you need or want more info, I'd be happy to post and walk you through it. I'll even go out there and take close up pictures of certain things (not taking the engine apart again though, sorry ) And I don't mean to make you feel stupid by posting a bunch of stuff that you may already know about so sorry if I did! ( : Let me know if you need anything, bro!
Oh, and mine is the 2003 LX with the same engine, I'm pretty sure.

yeah i may take some pics though if i did it wouldnt be as detailed as people would need it so i may not. off topic kinda but does anyone know if it is possible to swap an -a1 head for a k20a2 head? ive read a lot of posts about mixing an matching head->blocks just for the sake of having vtec so i was wondering if the k would work the same way. i am just starting to get into the swapping part of modding my vic so i have a lot of stupid questions like this. for the record i do know that a k20a2 swap would be the shiz but i dont have the dough for that.

A K20 head will NOT fit a D17 in any way. You will need to do a complete engine swap for that.
What you have is a D17A1 so the only head that would fit on it is a D17A2 but all you'd be gaining is the crappy EVTEC at that point. I'm not sure if any of the older D series heads fit on it but if you do some research I'm sure you can find some information on it D16Y7 I think might with some serious modification.

RSX is a nice car however only the RSX-S has a K20A2. The others have a K20A3 which is quite a bit slower. So if I were you I'd look for a type S (that's what it is here in Canada anyway, I'm not sure if the same applies for the States).
I like the looks of the EM2 better though myself.
