DIY: axleback muffler installation (01-05 Civics)

This DIY show how to install a bolt-on high flow axleback muffler on your 01-05 Civic.
For this installation, You will need few tools: a ratchet and a 12mm socket, a bottle of penetrating oil like PbBlaster, and the new muffler as shown in Figure1.

1- jack up the back of the car and place it on two jackstands. Make sure the gear is in reverse, and place a stone or something in front of the front tires.
2- spray some penetrating oil on the two bolts shown in Figure2 that connect the muffler to the pipe, then wait for the exhaust system to cool and the oil to penetrate well.
3- remove these two bolts using the ratchet and 12mm socket as shown in Figure3 and Figure4. These are spring bolts so you need to torque them few times before they pop out loose.
4- pull the two rubber pieces out of the muffler hangers as shown in Figure5. After that, you can take out the old muffler as shown in Figure6. Then move the two rubber pieces from the old muffler into the new muffler.
5- Hang the new muffler into the two hangers, then bolt it on the pipe
6- Turn on the car and make sure there are no leaks and you're done, as shown in Figure 7.

Now, enjoy the few extra horsepower, the nice look, and the deep sound of your new muffler

You know... I totally forgot that's how you install things. What are those long metal pieces called? Bolts?

Re: DIY: axleback muffler installation (01-05 Civics)

i decided to make my own DIY enjoy.
1.Wet car
2.Rub car with soapy water
3.Rinse
4.Dry
but seriously there are a ton of noobs out there that usually make this the first thing they do so its always nice to see things done first regardless of how easy it is. it gives you that extra bit of confidence and reassurance. now if only those spring bolt didn't rust out so badly but nothing ever really goes as planned.

Re: DIY: axleback muffler installation (01-05 Civics)

Thanks OP for taking the time to write this up and take pictures. It's always useful to have a DIY for something, no matter how simple it may be. Many people like to look at how daunting (or easy) a job is before they do it themselves, and this DIY serves that purpose. Now if only this was posted to the right section lol

Re: DIY: axleback muffler installation (01-05 Civics)

Whered u get it? And a vid showing how it wounds would be nice. Id like a full catback one day but until i can afford it i would like a deeper sound for cheap. My friend had a 98 si and he replaced the muffler for 80 bucks. It was used but no word of a lie it sounded really nice. Really deep and Not at all like his car just devoured a can of beans.

Thanks for the DIY but really, enjoy the extra horsepower? I hope u were kidding lmao

Re: DIY: axleback muffler installation (01-05 Civics)

i bought it from ebay with a cold air intake, both cost me around 110 bucks. the muffler had a silencer installed at the tip and after removing this it sounds awesome especially when saturating the rpm at one gear and switching to the next one, it sounds deep and loud. as far as the horsepower goes, i can feel some difference especially at high rpms. before installing the cold air intake and muffler, the engine used to struggle to go over 4500 rpm when reving it at idle. Right now, the engine revs smoothly into 5000 rpm, i can reach over 5500 rpm before feeling the struggle in the engine, so i would say that there is definetly some horsepower gain especailly at high rpms and highway speeds. however, there is no difference at all when accelerating from a stop.

Re: DIY: axleback muffler installation (01-05 Civics)

Hmm..
1. A muffler will not increase the power.
2. It does not sound nice, it sounds loud. All this thing does is annoy everyone around you.
3. Put the silencer back if you plan to keep it.

Not trying to be rude or anything, but you need to put your stock muffler back on and send that thing back. Get yourself a quality brand catback exhaust that actually sounds half decent.

Re: DIY: axleback muffler installation (01-05 Civics)

I still wanna see a vid... Could u please do me a favour and put one up with the silencer in? I can already imagine how bad it sounds without it and it definitely wouldn't be my ideal for long distance trips

Unless you guys know another way that i can get a nice sound without getting the full catback (like i said i plan to later though)

Anything like that??

You can get a high quality muffler that still muffles sound. It will give you decent sound but not as good as a catback.

Example? The muffler in the vid had a nice sound, and its cheap too... He took the vid right after putting it on so that might be the answer for the smoke

Re: DIY: axleback muffler installation (01-05 Civics)

I honestly don't have an example. Apexi makes a good one but its part of their catback system. I'm not sure if you can buy just the muffler itself. Apexi WS1 i think it's called.

Re: DIY: axleback muffler installation (01-05 Civics)

Honestly I just wanted to say this is actually useful to me. The pipe next to the flange connecting my muffler pipe to the resonator just broke apart driving today. It's nice to have pictures of an exhaust thats not all rusted to **** before I get at it tomorrow.

Tonight, it's time to get that WD-40 soak going
