Help! Timing belt tensioner problems 01 Civic

OK, we'll get this out of the way.... I'm new to this forum. I have decent DIY mechanical abilities, Big honda fan, on my 2nd civic (first totalled by a DD, and 2nd accord v6 (first had transmission issues, didn't have the cash to pony up for a new transmission, so we traded it)

I have a problem.... a BIG problem. (shoulda found this site first!). As stated above, I am quite familiar with Honda maintenance, and do everything myself....

So, have an '01 Civic EX with 103,000 on it. In the middle of replacing the water pump. Along with it, i'm replacing the timing belt, tensioner, valve cover gasket, the other 2 belts, and some other miscellaneous stuff as i find it...

I guess the Timing belt tensioner was re-designed at some point. I put on the new tensioner with the old (shorter 50.6 mm) bolt. After a few seconds of tension from the belt, the tensioner flew off, taking some of the threads with it.

Got a different bolt from honda (54.0 mm) and tried to put the new tensioner on. The threads wouldn't quite bite well from the damage from the previous attempt, so i heli-coiled it. Well, put the tensioner on, and was torquing it up. My FiL (a retired mechanic) was helping me and told me to torque the tensioner bolt to 86 ft lbs... OOPS. Now I have a sheared off tensioner bolt stuck in the block.

Anyone been here before? Between the camshaft pulley bolt and this, I'm ready to set this car on fire and push it down my driveway.

Thanks in advance!

I used the stock tensioner bolt, I've never had to change it when I've done timing belt/WP jobs. Can you get a picture of what your working with right now?

Usually a broken bolt snapped off in a block means bad mojo...You are going to have to pull the motor to get full access to the bolt and use a drill and bolt extractor....Or maybe raise the motor high enough to get access....

BTW 86ftlbs? HOLY CRAP!!! That's a lot of torque for that small of a bolt...Think he may have meant inlbs?

There is a thread on here that has a link to the manual...

Re: Help! Timing belt tensioner problems 01 Civic

yea... there's definitely a difference between the two. I thought the part I got from auto zone may have been crap, so i got one from Napa. The one came from Napa had a bulletin in with it that specified to measure the original bolt. If it was 50.6 mm, to get a replacement from honda that was 54 mm. Took the 2 parts to Honda. they confirmed my original tensioner was factory, and the new one matched the factory part.... but they had no record of a redesign.... maybe leftovers from 6th gen? who knows....

I'll post a pic of the 2 as soon as i figure it out.

Is the bolt broken flush against the block? Do you have enough thread to get 2 nuts on there? If you are mechanically inclined and have broken as many bolts as I have you know what I am getting at...

Let us know man, we can get your through this...
