Alternator issue

My Alternator does not seem to be working properly. I've been having to tap it with a hammer to get it going. I test for the voltage everytime I start it up and it's just over 11v every time. but after a few taps it goes up to 14.4v. Once I get I get the alternator going it doesn't quit but once I turn off the car and go to re-start it I have to tap it again. Is my alternator garbabge and is it time for a new one or could it be something very minor that needs attention. Thanks

Re: Alternator issue

first, check the plug that goes to the alternator. see of its loose.

second, see if its slipping on the belt.

if its not that then ur alternator is done.

you alternator is on the verge of dying. i suggest you get it replaced asap before it takes a **** on you when you are far away from home...then you'll spend more money getting it towed bak to a shop.

Re: Alternator issue

Double check your connections..Hitting it with the hammer could be vibrating the connection to where it needs to be(however unlikely). I would pull it and have it tested, sounds like its done to me though.
