Oil change question

I changed my oil today... and put exactly 3.2L as the manual says. When I check the dip stick, it's exactly half way between the two dots. My dad insists that I need to add more until it reaches the top dot. Who's right?

Re: Oil change question

I always go to the top dot, which seems closer to 3.7 quarts since I always have just a bit left of my 4th bottle of oil

Re: Oil change question

i keep mine right at full. i never add the same amount of oil each time, so dont go by a set measurement. fill it up so that you can see it around 1/2 way on the stick, then drive the car at least once til its fully warmed up and recheck the level after the car cools down. then add more to the top.

Re: Oil change question

It says 3.7 for the EX and 3.4 for the LX.. I dump 4 quarts in my EX and it barely puts me over the top..

Re: Oil change question

I put in 4 quarts (with oil filter change) and call it good. Worked fine for me for over 300,000 miles.

EDIT>> and the EP3 (K20A3) 5 quarts.

Re: Oil change question

You don't need to add oil to reach the top mark but it is better if you do. The more oil the better to hold dirt and contaminates and prevent breakdown of the oil.

Re: Oil change question

it also guards against low oil if you do not check the level every couple weeks like you should. most people never check their own oil. and if you drive aggressively, having low oil can cause you to lose oil pressure on a sharp turn.

Re: Oil change question

I work at a lube shop and the everyone here is both right and wrong first of all is it an ex with d17a2 or and lx dx etc with d17a1 because the a2 will take 3.5 liters of oil and the a1 takes 3.2 liters so fill it 3/4 up the dipstick your oil will be full when the car is at operating temp.

3.2 and 3.5 quarts (not liters) is correct if the filter is not changed. With a filter Honda lists 3.4 quarts for the DX and LX models and 3.7 quarts for the EX.

I did check and 3.2 liters = 3.4 qts and 3.5 liters = 3.7 qts so you are correct but since most of the oil I have seen is old in quarts I wanted to be clear.

Re: Oil change question

In that case, how exactly was I wrong? Why dont you read through the posts before saying everyone is wrong.. Quote "It says 3.7 for the EX and 3.4 for the LX.."
