Overheating and vibrating tranny issues

Yesterday it rained. In fact, it rained harder than it has ever in a long time. Shortly after the rain started I began to feel a severly rough vibration comeing from the shift ****. Along with this worry some and abnormal concern my stock temperture gauge rose to about two clicks or hashes from the overheating indicator(the red mark).
I chose to continue my short trip home while also paying close attention to the gauge and shift ****. I had observed the vibration was quite intermittantly rattling and the gauge rising and lowering intermittantly as well.
There were no abormal sounds from the motor or performance issues, besides overheating. When I returned home I had noticed that the engine and engine bay were not any more overheated than it has been on previous hard runs. And all or the fluids I would assume could cause overheating were at there normal levels.
Could you all provide me with explaination or assumed explanation to why this had occured?

Also this same very thing occured one other time while driving on a hot summer day with no rain present. Although the day was warm it has been higher than normal temps here for some time and the issue is not consistant.
Thanks.
