Looking At Buying 02 Civic EX

Hi,

I'm looking at buying an 02 Civic EX. The one I am looking at has 162000 on the clock, but seems to ride great. I opened the hood and there seems to be a fair amount of rust on the right side engine compartment including a lot of the bolts and exhaust manifold. The car is going for $5400 and has a one owner clean Carfax and service records, but I'm worried about the high milage & rust.

Anyone have any opinions on this before I hand over the cash?

Thanks,

Guvnor

Manual or Auto? Be careful buying an auto... the 01-02's had major transmission problems.

Yep, its an auto. Seems to be running fine. Should I run for the hills while I can?

Re: Looking At Buying 02 Civic EX

5400 for an '02 IMO is outrageous. Especially an auto, and ESPECIALLY with 162,000 on it already.

If you do really, really like it. I would try to get the maintenance records. These tranny's really aren't great. I've heard of people that have gone through 2 or 3 of them with that many miles on the engine.

Other then that, though. I can't think of any complaints about these cars. They really are excellent little machines.....hope this helps!

Re: Looking At Buying 02 Civic EX

Well, I payed $3,000 for my girl's 2002 civic EX AUTO with 180,000 but it was in perfect condition, one owner and EVERY service record with EVERY scheduled service done on time.
Also, I just payed $4,700 for my 2002 Civic EX MANUAL with 133,000 on it in great condition with a new transmission, new clutch, new paint, new control arms, sport suspension, and sweet rims.

So I would say that price is WAY too high! And this is in South Florida too...Offer less or get a different car...don't over pay, craigslist is great!

That means you only got 168k KMS on your original engine.. in other words just over 100, 000 miles. That's not very promising. I wouldnt' get it if it's rusting. You can find a rust free civic with that many miles and around the same kms.

Correct, but the only reasy we had to replace the engine is because our rad cracked, and was leaking, did not know, ran out of coolant, over heated. We put in a USED stock D17A with 80,000 on it, and have ran it since. Almost 300,000km on it now.

I am not trying to say you should buy that car. If it is rusting already I would not even think about it. You can most definitely find a better civic with NO rust for cheaper than that. I would keep looking. That is a very high price for a rusting 02 civic. I debated on selling mine a few months back (BAD CHOICE) and i was going to list for $2800. I have no rust except for a few marks on the hood.

Re: Looking At Buying 02 Civic EX

If it has a lot of rust then don't do it... you'll regret it because the rust just spreads. As for the price... that's not really outrageous. I really think it matters what part of the country you live in for these cars because 01-03 civic EXs in WI with 100k miles often go for around 7500. Even private sellers consistently ask over 6500.

Re: Looking At Buying 02 Civic EX

Agreed, Cost usually depends highly on location. A 2002 Ex coupe goes for around $4200+ here and thats for a manual. Automatic cars are more expensive in general by a couple hundred bucks.
