Mine are rusted and dont like the rusted look especially with my black rims. New drums arent expensive and wasnt willing to spend hours and hours getting all the rust off my old ones, so I bought a new set for $75/pair today. I hit it with brake cleaner and 3 coats of VHT high heat paint. I covered up the entire centre area because i was told its best not to have paint on them as that is the surface that is in contact with your rims. So if its best to leave that part untouched what can i put on so it wont rust later?

non, non, your other thread says hot pink
as for the contact point with the rims, just leave them as they are, they will not be visible from outside either. A clear coat or paint surface is not homogeneous, so it could affect the seating of the rims to the drums. just leave them as they are.

I was excited, i thought someone found hot pink caliper paint.. I've been looking for that for a year.
Aside from that, it took me less than 5 minutes to clean the rust off my drums.
