so which is it? is it safe to follow the guide or should i really do 1/3rd drain/fill?

its always better to do 1/3rd otherwise you are putting too much new fluid in that can cause problems.

Too Tall

Don't confuse oil change procedures of manual and automatic transmissions. I've never changed Honda manual tranny fluid, but I assume it has a drain plug that drains all the fluid out. Auto trannies drain about 1/3 total oil capacity out of the pan because the rest remains in the torque converter and oil cooler.

yeah youre right, manual trans only has 1.7 qts total capacity and doing a single fluid change replaces almost all of it (1.6 qts).

so what i'm understanding is that auto trannies require the 1/3rd fill/drain because you have no choice, and manual trannies are ok to drain cause .1 quarts will always remain inside?

yeah autos have a 9qt capacity but draining the fluid only removes 3 qt.

Consider that an estimate. I think the 07 Civic auto tranny drains 2.3 qts on one oil pan drain.

Check your oil level before you drain, and measure the amount of oil you drain out, run the tranny through the gears with the tires in the air before trying to drive to ensure air bubbles don't get to the clutches.

I just did my first drain and fill (2.75 quarts). It was a real challenge getting the drain plug loose! I thought I was going to either break the plug or the ratchet! All went well after the huge breaking sound. I jacked up the drivers side first. Seems like you may get a bit more fluid out that way. The manual indicates a 2.5 quart fill although I measured 2.75 quarts. It's at the top of the fill range when it's hot so I figure that's a good thing! As far as I know, this is the first transmission fluid change and I had 40,500 miles on the car.I bought the car in nov 2011 and it had 8,700 miles on it. Hopefully if I keep the fluids maintained, this car will last a good long time. Oh, I did use the newly recommended Honda Genuine DW-1 which replaced the Z-1 fluid. I also use the mobil1 extended performance fully synthetic motor oil.

i just changed mine yesterday too,

i removed the passenger side front wheel, then i used a whole bunch of 3/8 extensions so i could use my breaker bar outside the wheel well,

i used a jackstand to support the end of the entensions then used my breaker bar to loosen, this made it very simple, kind of the same procedure used to remove the crank pulley bolt,

made it easy to use my torque wrench when tightening the bolt too,

while it was draining i lowered the passenger side of the car until the brake rotor was almost touching the floor, this helped to drain out some additional fluid

From a Honda fluid tech who is a friend...my 2001 Civic LX has the following done for a flush. Drain the fluid out of the tranny from loosening the plug on the passenger side. Poor ATF fluid (any standard type)in the dipstick hole using the same amount as drained . Drive for about 3-4 miles at all speeds and shifting through all gears at their perspective speeds. Drain while hot. Then of course reinsert plug and fill with Honda ATF. Done!
