Search there are tons of threads on this. simple answer is yes you can put/add disk brakes to the rear, and you cant make fronts from another Civic work on the back, you need to buy a really expensive aftermarket set or find some Si rears at a junk yard, but search for more in depth posts.

Front brakes work just fine with my rear disk brake setup from an ep3.

Sorry I kind of worded that wrong was just letting him know that you cant make a set of used Honda front brakes work on the rear of a Civic, so many people have asked if that is possible in other threads so if he was thinking about trying it I thought I should let him know. Anyway I reworded my post.

it really will not add much stopping power at all. fronts do over 85% of the work. but yeah there is a whole thread about using ep3 rear disc setup.

I agree not going to add much stopping power, if you are looking for stopping power do the big brake kit in front someone on here is selling them $380 shipped. I am going to do that and leave my rear drums, maybe down the road if I found a steal on a set of Si rears I might do it just for looks and the fact that I like tweaking with stuff.

Yeah thats it Boomers big brakes, I just looked into doing the rears (I had some time to blow), anyway found a few junk yards that had the Si rear stuff to convert minus the rotors and calipers for $200, but I did find calipers for $70 and new rotors would be like $140. Little more than I wanted to spend lordhelmet where did you find everything for $200?

I pieced mine together from ephatch and crsx. Knuckles and rotors from ephatch, calipers and brake lines from crsx, and found a local seller on ebay for the rsx ebrake cables.

no need for bigger front brakes unless you want to run huge cheap heavy rims, but if you going to spend a 1k on big brakes i hope you buy a quality wheel, big brake kits are more for aesthetic purposes not performance. Plus you throw off the braking distribution.
Just buy some nice cross drilled and slotted rotors with a quality pad, best performance for the price there

Drilled rotors are the worst thing you can do.

From my understanding they take surface area away from the pads creating less braking ability, but they do help cool your brakes down. On a DD they wont help you but on a car where you are on and off your brakes like a track car they would help cool your brakes down.

see picture below - this is what they tend to do, even some of the most expensives require constant checks if you use them on the track. DD should be fine most of the cases, though.

drilled rotors have a bigger positive then negative outlook, yes you lose surface but you also increase cooling for less brake fade. Thats the build up of heat that creates a cushion of hot gas between the pad and rotor.
on another note you're buying a performance part, so you lose some longevity of what a solid disc can do. Also cross drilled will warp faster then a solid disc.
my twenty cents. lol

Don't buy cross drilled rotors unless they are manufactured and drilled by the same company using quality metal (like brembo makes).
Really if you want the best braking get big slotted rotors with good venting.
Rears should be disk also so that they engage evenly in the front and the back. Rears always seem to be out of adjustment when using combination brakes.

you are right about constant checking on a track driven car and that cracking is usually caused by a poorly made rotor, that problem doesn't happen often, and i have to question what the application of this rotor was, it looks fairly old.

i hear even the quality ones could get crackings, from top to bottom of the quality sellers also, including porsches and ferrari's so checking them frequently is a must if you prefer to stop when you want. like stated before and reinforced by you, it's more common to track cars.
The cushion of hot gases does not apply anymore by the use of the more modern materials being used in the pads - just FYI.

I'm running rear discs on my car. ep3 rear knuckle assemblies & RSX e-brake cables.

I disagree. Big brakes essentially give more leverage. they make quite a bit of difference.

sdaid we agree about track cars, but brake fade is still present in brake system, its hot air(gas) its thermal heat build up. Shouldn't have to worry about that in a dd vehicle because you should never be at a speed where you have to press and ride the brakes that long. And the materials you speak of i'm assuming asbestos? organic and metallics are still being used in pads.

bigger does not mean better when the engineers at honda came up with the design and the countless testing of braking systems, this is a function of reliability and cost. Yes in theory the bigger disc grab better the the oem size, but you forget that the braking system ties in with the rear so the brake distribution is thrown off. You would also need a modified brake proportioning valve that can compensate, so i agree with you that the bigger brake will grab and hold better then a smaller one but for performance stand point its a waste of money, the big brake kits are primarily for aesthetics. Are light weight cars stop pretty good already, and the advantage of the smaller disc is less weight and less mass to turn. I can go all day about this.

Another thing to consider is the rim size. You cannot fit huge brakes inside of small rims. It would not make sense to put big rims with low profile tires on a commuter car and lessen the ride quality. For instance that is why all of the new trucks now use 16" wheels while my 89 Bronco uses 15's, because of the improved (larger brakes).
How would it be a waste of money if it works better? That's the whole point in modding a car to begin with. Why not make a car go from stopping "pretty good" to "great". aftermarket proportioning valves do not cost much and new mounting brackets for calipers are inexpensive also. Stopping power will do nothing but make your car safer to drive.
You are right about one thing honda does consider cost alot when testing their brakes that's why hondas are cheap and have little power and moderate braking. This is not a high perforamnce car and niether are it's brakes.
To answer your question... I was talking about the rotor material. Asbestos and metallic are used in pads. New pads do release less gasses but they still release some that's why I slotted rotors work well they release gasses that get trapped between the pad and rotor and clean the pad removing brake dust. Good venting is the best way to release heat. Cheaper rotors generally have poor venting.

all this is empty talk. our brakes are already very good, yes bigger brakes like on luxury cars stop faster, but thats because they have to on a 500hp car. we drive light, 90hp civics and the factory brakes will stop you in a hurry. instead of spending thousands on parts that might help you stop a little faster, spend money on better tires that WILL stop you ALOT faster. if you have crappy tires, no amount of brake upgrades (or suspension upgrades) will work for you. remember its ultimately the tires friction that stop the car.

most of the cases, you also reduce fade, but not much on braking distance with just brakes.
Wonder if they would make the ABS crazy.

Agreed. Nice brakes are worthless without good tires. On my 93 Buick Regal GS I had about $900+ worth of sticky tires. I could beat much smaller/lighter/faster cars through the twisties and it stopped very well. I actually roasted the brakes 5 times. I ended up spending more money on brakes anyway cause they couldn't keep up with the tires performance and they kept overheating (smoking), glazing the pads and warping the rotors. It even had the touring package with disks all around and better suspension.
P.S. One of the best cars I have ever owned!

I have heard that if you swap for the EP3 proportioning valve you'll notice the difference with the rear disc conversion. I was just lazy, and now too busy to do that.. lol
