Rep Power: 0 Car shuts off suddenly, why?
I have a 2001 JDM ES3 Civic with a D17a
Several times it happen to me, I am driving and stop at
a stop light and the car shuts off, without stalling.
Why could have caused that.

can we get some more information on this. Does it just stop working and you get a check code? Does it struggle a bit and then die. Does it make a strange sound or throw any codes? What does it do after words? is it hard to start up after or does it fire up right away. See where I'm getting at? We also need to know more information on your set up. Please provide more detail if you want us to help you fix this.

With the scanner that my coworker used no codes showed up.
No, check light does not comes on
It struggle a little sometimes, but does not die. (the rpm does real low)
When the engine dies it restart without hesitation.
I just have a col air intake setup.

Check your igniton as well. I had a big problem a while back. I had hardly any spark on the #1,2,4 cylinders and after replacing alot of **** it ended up being the PCM. My car would start to struggle and end up dying on me so one day I figured out it was the PCM. It wouldn't start up right away for some reason and I noticed after a few times that when I reset the PCM (Unplugged the battery) it would start up right away. That's when I realized man the PCM is ****ing retarded! Got a new one and had Honda sync it. Problem closed!

if the car is only shutting off when at a stop with foot off the gas, it might be a clogged IAC (idle air control valve). if it does not work properly to let air in at idle bypassing the throttle body, the rpm can drop and shut down the motor. usually it is easy to unbolt and clean it up, then do the idle learn procedure.

Sorry Gearbox, this might not related. I m driving VP and I do not have the rpm so can I just guess. Let's say if let the rpm stay more than 3000? can we relearn that. Otherwise, I have to buy that rpm meter or the OBD II tools : )

Sorry man I typed without thinkin'
Basically without tachometer, is there anyway to relearn idle? I might need a OBD II gadgets.

Yes unplug your battery long enough to reset the ECU. Reconnect your battery and start your car. allow it to idle for like 10mins and your ECU should relearn the VE and idle of your D17. Turn off the car and it saves it I believe.

depends on the car, but usually it is either bolted to the throttle body or intake manifold. it has two coolant hoses running into it.
