timing belt myth?

Is it true? If the timing belt breaks the engine will blow and scrap metal will fly everywhere?

Re: timing belt myth?

No.

It can suddenly make a very brief loud noise, then become very quiet, never to make noise on its own again until someone spends a whole bunch of money on it.

No spectacular fireball or scattering parts all over the road....
but there is some scrap involved as bent valves cannot be salvaged.

I just got done with a Mitsubishi 3.8 engine that chucked timing components on the highway at 80 MPH, it bent about 20 valves and broke a bunch of valve guides in both cylinder heads, ruining both heads.

if metal "flys" anywhere, it will be inside the engine, you wont see anything from the exterior, and yes it will do alot of damage

Re: timing belt myth?

if the timing belt goes your car will cease to exist all time will stop and stephen hawking will bitch smack you for not replacing your belt. also Neil DeGrasse Tyson will have bad things to say about you.

Re: timing belt myth?

i was just kidding about the scrap metal. im not a mechanic and do what i can to save $. i'v heard differant stories over the years about the broken timing belt. just wanted to see whats up with it. not sure about my belt, if it was done or not. as i just got this car. havent had a timing belt car in years. small block chevys use chains. had a 96 prizm same as a corolla. 225k no timing belt ever. ran mobil one. it was my miss understanding that if a belt broke you just replace it with a new one and set the alignment marks and your good to go. but that might have been that p.o.s. ford escort. that i was more them willing to scrap out. so your saying replace the timing belt or rebuild the motor on the honda civic 1.7 2001. so no clearance in the motor/valves/pistons?

yes you can have a hit,we got plenty out here in colorado. and its the that cheap crap from the south

Hahaha...... I come from the olden days when SBC camshafts got flat lobes and nylon teeth timing gears were only lasting 70k. And you could buy tune up parts everywhere, even some grocery stores.
so your saying replace the timing belt or rebuild the motor on the honda civic 1.7 2001
The timing belt job is the cheaper option -- according to my olden days math.

so no clearance in the motor/valves/pistons?
These bend valves if the timing belt lets go.

If anyone has a timing belt let go while driving and the engine DOESN'T bend some valves, they need to go buy lottery tickets.

that p.o.s. ford escort.
The Ford 1.9 IDK, but the old Racescort GT with the 1.8 DOHC Mazda engine was not a valve bender.

I gave it up for lent. It would slow me down now.

haha.....my parents had an 89 ford escort, the timing belt snapped TWICE on that engine, no damage whatsoever, replace the belt and good to go,

however these engines are alot different, the pistons will hit the valves and cause alot of destruction, its much cheaper to replace the belt when nessessary, then pay for the belt plus the damaged parts
