DIY: Custom Factory Carpet Color Change

Ok, this is probably one of the easiest, cheapest things you can do to improve the appearance of your cars interior. It doesn't take make much time or effort and the results make people think you spent a whole lot more than you did. I'm sure many of you have a stain or two on your car floor that wont come out. I know I did, so I searched for places to replaces the carpet. I had quotes from $250 -$400. I said the hell with that and did it my self for under $10.00 Only *Special Tool* required is a kiddie pool.

This is the before:

Step One:

Remove seats (make sure to disconnect clips, and be sure not to turn the key on while seats are out of the car), center console, door sill trim pieces, lower portion of rear seat and anything else that is in the way of the carpet comming out of the vehicle.

Step Two:

Stand back and look at how gross your carpet looks.

Step Three:

Remove the white padding from under the carpet. It might rip a little, no big deal. I you want you can get new padding from the craft store for a few dollars.

Step Four:

Vacuum the heck out of the carpet with a household vacuum. If you have a steam cleaner use that too.

Step Five:

If you have a large enough washing machine through the carpet in and give it a good wash. If not you can hose down the carpet in your drive way and use a scrub brush and soap.

Step Six:

Fill kiddie pool with water (hot water works better). I used three bottles of Black Rit-dye http://www.ritdye.com/Liquids.28.51.5.lasso and then put your carpet in there. It will have to sit in there for a few hours depending on the color you choose and your stock carpet color. Just be sure to flip the carpet over a few times throughout the coloring process.

Step Seven:

Wait........ While waiting go back and clean out the inside of your car, you would be amazed at how dirty your so called clean car really is.

Step Eight:

Remove the better than new carpet from the pool, lay on driveway or clothes line, and let dry.

Step Nine:

Be amazed that you just saved $400 by cleaning your car out better than you ever have before

Looks good, would go especially nice w/ EP seats or other black interior pieces.

Re: DIY: Custom Factory Carpet Color Change

The pool cost about $5.00 at Wal-Mart, get a little kiddie pool, that's what I used. Through it out when you are done. Otherwise it was fine, it did not stain it. I will post pics later today after I clean out my car.
