Unhappy touch up paint?

Is there anyone that can give me some advice on where I can get some touch-up paint if I can't get any from the dealer? It's been hard to find because I have the 'veloz' model from 2002 which only came out in two colours. I have the 'metallic satin silver' that has the sparkle crap in it so I think the regular satin silver touch up paint will be noticeable.

I'm trying to repair a long ass keymark that goes down the side of the car that some jerk walked along and did while it was parked in front of my house after I first got the car 2 years ago. Worst thing about it is my garage was going to be finished in only two more days and I was almost able to start parking in there.

Thanks.

Re: touch up paint?

please dont use a spray can from ebay on your car. thats a can of possible worms.

at least test it out first. touch up paint should blend nicely. its gotta be inconspicuous. and a keymark is a really long piece for some touch up paint. have you thought about a body shop blending it?

Re: touch up paint?

um, the satin silver at the dealer is a metallic paint. tons of civic are painted that color and its very common.

Re: touch up paint?

satin silver is very common yeah, but in 2002 when the veloz edition came out with all the little bits and extras, it only came out in two specific colours that didnt come on any other regular models (si in canada, ex in the states) . one colour was something black and i forget the name, the other is called 'metallic satin silver' which is the one i have. its different than the regular satin silver. if you bought a veloz, it was only in one of those two colours and both didn't come on any other regular model.

as for the body shops quote, i had one guy quote it and he gave me a crappy price that i dont even want to mention, it was over 4 digits. he said he had to paint all the panels like i was an idiot or something. it only went through the clear coat at one part thats above the rear passenger wheel well. thats the part i need the touchup paint for, i think i can buff the rest out (i hope).

Re: touch up paint?

so youre saying metallic satin silver is different from satin silver metallic? interesting. and i agree touchup paint wont look the greatest, but if you do an okay job, it will look much better than having a chip or rust color. i would not do anything larger than a small chip tho.

Re: touch up paint?

Well, thats pretty much what im going for. when it comes to any type of work on my car i do my best to be as precise as i can (like most people here would be) so with the touchup paint id be as careful as i can and do it as clean as possible.

i mean, anything will look better than a big keystroke over the rear wheel well. the key mark actually extends from the passenger mirror all the way to above the back wheel well, but 70% of it is just clearcoat and i think can be buffed, im going to try that. its the deep part thats near the rear that im worried about. im sure if i was able to get just the regular satin silver metallic touchup paint it would be a little noticeable....but with a good polish and buff job, not as noticeable as a deep key mark....and i can always fix it really good later on down the road when i find a permanent solution.

god you have no idea what id do to the person who did it if i ever found out....id rather have someone smash into my car and steal everything in it or strip it down. at least the crackhead would get something out of it rather than doing damage to be a jealous hating asshole. all happened only a few days before my garage was finished too.

Re: touch up paint?

I understand your frustration. But something you're going to need to consider is the 6 years that have passed since your car was painted.

If you got a can of paint that was a "perfect match," that paint would match the color the car was when it was new, not after 6 years of very, very slight fading. It's not noticeable until you put the two colors side-by-side, i.e. painting one over the other.

It's possible that you may be able to buff out or color-sand (not familiar with that, so I can't say) parts of it, but if you're very careful with your car's upkeep (which I am, and it sounds like you are) I would recommend taking it to a body shop. Not to say you don't have the skills or are incapable, but I'm guessing you don't have a pnuematic spraygun to blend it into the rest of the car. The rear quarter is an awful big panel, and it's possible for some shops to blend a section of the panel into the rest.

Some shops, by policy, will only repaint whole panels at a time, and have to blend into the adjoining panels to ensure a seamless finish, and that may have something to do with the guy that said he'd have to paint multiple panels. Yeah, it's a bad moneymaking scheme and is a shade lazy, but welcome to capitalism.
