indexing is the term you're looking for.
if you don't have marks on them, it's easy to tell how they line up just how they're made/how the strut tower is shaped. if you still have the popping, check to see if your strut bushing between the top hat and spring seat is bad. mine completely deteriorated and disappeared and i didn't know until i took the strut off to see why it was popping.
