A Switch to Mobil 1

I've searched this topic on this forum and another and can't quite get a grip around a topic. My '01 with 68,000 miles is currently running conventional Castoroil 5w20. I want to switch to Mobil 1 full synthetic due to that I've heard that it quites the lifters and offers better protection.

Questoin 1 - Is an engine block flush needed to rid it of the used conventional oil?

Question 2 - Does synthetic oil need a special oil filter?

These questions rise from the commonwealth I've spoken to, truth worthy or not. I purchased Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic in a 5 quart bottle from Wal-Mart for $20 and a Mobile 1 Oil Filter from Auto Zone for an outragous $11. When compared to the oil life of synthetic to conventional, the costs come to relatively the same, but does any kind of decent oil filter (Bosch, Fram) filter synthetic oil thoroughly. Whats up.

Re: A Switch to Mobil 1

I can't tell you what to do, but I can tell you what I do. I switched to valvoline full synthetic about 20,000 miles ago. It is awesome. Some idiot kept putting 10w-30 in my car when I whent to NTB, and even my local honda dealer. My thoughts were it says right on the freakin oil cap 5w-20. I use a K&N oil filter. I have used fram in past and did not like it is much. When I switched, I did not flush the engine, but I did check the oil far more often to see if some of the rumors of the oil just mixing and making a sludgy mess were true, I found they weren't.

Re: A Switch to Mobil 1

I use to use Mobile 1 on my 03' Dodge 1500 Quad truck with a V8,,,has 110,000+ miles on it runs great,,,,Lifters are a little noisey on morning startup but only for a few seconds. I do an oil filter change out only around July 4th of each year and top off the oil to full (less than 1/2 qrt.). I do a full drain of the crankcase oil around Januaruy 1 of each year and install new oil filter and refill the crankcase with oil (it does not use/burn any oil). I drive it approx. 20,000+ miles per year. I also have an 01 dodge minivan with 115,000 miles on it...I do the same type extended drain interval on it as well. I use July 4th and January 1st as a reminder to do oil service on these vehicles. I have recently changed out to Amsoil synthetic oil and will be switching my daughters 01 civic ex (recent purchase) to synthetic as well.

ehhhh thats a bit long for my tastes...especially with how the oil looks when I change mine...no way. Then again, I drive about 80 miles a day. Also a big fan of mobil 1.

Re: A Switch to Mobil 1

I made the switch a few months ago, i figured its about the same ammount of money compared to getting a shop to put conventional in. I just made sure to drain it really well, i use 5w-30, from what i read 5w-30 is fine for our cars. When i made the switch i just made sure to let all the old oil drain for a long time. Also i used a fram dual guard filter, everything seems to work real well. I love it and wont ever go back.

Re: A Switch to Mobil 1

I've heard alot of great things about synthetic oil. I've switched but haven't driven yet. I'm in the process of a full detail. I go back to college next week and I'm trying to get my civ straight. Just finished the Meguiar's 3 step system and tomorrow will include a windexing and mat vacuum. I want to get some pics

Re: A Switch to Mobil 1

I purchased my Civic with 14,600 miles. I have almost 60,000 on it now.

I've always used Mobil 1, 5W-20, regular synthetic oil (not the Extended Interval or special stuff). OEM filter too. They're pretty cheap and very effective based on a few hours of research. I might do 5W-30 for the New England summer months (May, June, July, August) next year.

My oil and filter change interval is 5,000 miles (+/- 150 miles).
