Stall

So I got a weird one here fellas. Looking for any help I can get.

Just purchased an 2011 EX-L with 70K. LOVE IT. Last car was a 1991 Accord that was literally falling apart.

I did my do diligence and brought it to HONDA to be checked out, everything was gravy. Bought the car. Next stop was the dealership for a 100,000 mile check up. Replaced sparks and adjusted lifters etc. No issues.

THE PROBLEM - Between 17-19 mph the car shudders violently, like a full stall. It is an automatic obviously. It will only happen when I accelerate very slowly. I live in ATL so traffic is a monster and this happens often. If I maintain a good speed off the line it will not happen. I was convinced it was a small vacuum leak but no check engine, no codes, no whistle etc.

I brought it back to the Honda dealership and they could not duplicate it so they just updated all my computers including TCU. Still happens.

Could this still be a vacuum leak, possible bad gear in the tranny? I'm out of ideas here any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kinda sounds like it would be torque converter shudder.

Change the trans fluid first, and it may need done more than once.

Drain and fill using Hondas DW-1 fluid only.


Drive it to see if it helped.

Drain and fill again, then drive it some more to see if it helped.

If you can change your own oil, you can do this too.

Takes about 3 quarts each time you drain and fill it.
It might take up to 4 fluid changes, as the trans holds a lot more than can be drained.



If this doesn't improve the feeling, it might need the torque converter replaced.
Someone really should verify this guess is correct before dropping a bunch of money to pull the trans and do that though.
