Replacing Transmission Fluid

Is there any reason with normal driving, i. e., stop & go and less than 5 miles per trip to change transmission fluid any more often than when the maintenance minder says to?

IMHO Yes.

At the shop we recommend every 30k -- regardless of what the maintenance minder says.

Personally, I have been changing mine at every other oil change.
I was doing the same with my mothers 02 Accord up until she got rid of it.

Re: Replacing Transmission Fluid

ezone did you mean 30,000 Canadian KM"s or U.S miles? automatic or stick?
because 30,000 Canadian kms. is early to change trans oil especially on a 5 speed.? unless its being driven really hard.

Re: Replacing Transmission Fluid

Oh sorry, I'm in the US and meant miles (OP mentioned "5 miles per trip").
And I was thinking of automatic transmissions.
I didn't even think of converting to KMs.

The automatics that Honda builds haven't exactly had a stellar track record in the past, so we have always recommended more frequent services in attempt to get more useful life out of them with (hopefully) fewer problems.

Manual trans: there are the input shaft bearing problems that are so well known, and I should hope that alone would cause you to want at least regular services on normal schedule if you have a manual trans.
Price a rebuild or bearing job vs. a couple quarts of fluid every 30k....
Not that changing the fluid is any guarantee it will never have the bearing problems, but what the hey.

yeah.... I agree and to have heard the automatic transmissions are not
the most dependable. that's Fact. especially on the earlier odysees wich is why I
only like "5 speed manuals". less internal parts for something to go wrong
but around here I have not heard of (input shaft bearing) problems being
a problem on 8th gen civics?

I haven't seen any here yet either, but then we really have very few manual trans cars that I'm aware of here.

Re: Replacing Transmission Fluid

My 2008 civic lx is 6 years old and has 20,000 miles on it so 30,000 would work out about right especially since the minder code for it hasn't come up. I'm assuming that the type of driving that I do, i.e., stop and go and less than 5 miles per trip would make no difference.

Just by age, I'd be doing a drain and fill now, what about your brake fluid ?? It has a 3 year recommended interval.

The MM is too long on AT service, even under normal driving.

You will need a revised schedule due to low mileage, and age.
