D & Neutral vs. Foot brake?

Hello fellow members,
Well, I was wondering you auto transmission people if you guys like to put your car in neutral when you guys get to a red light. Here in CA where I live it's mostly flat and I'm pretty lazy to hold my foot on the brake and wait for the light and I developed this habit of sliding it to N when I get close to the light and then brake completely. I was curious if doing this often will do any damage to the car. Or is it better to just hold the brake and wait? I don't know, something I've been wondering for a while.

I believe there was somewhere from either fueleconomy.gov or the owners manual that says to put the car in neutral if you are going to stay stopped for a long period of time, if its a short red it doesn't help you out.
I think the worst thing you can do is try to shift the car like a manual. Otherwise I don't think it does your car any harm.

i do it at every light but only once i stop first. it will save the trans by letting it cool off at lights.
